whos got vinyl?
anyone want to recommend a record player?
i was thinking this could be a good place to perhaps trade and sell vinyl, if not simply talk about folks record collections

i just got Live/Dead and Talking Heads '77 :biggrin:

When it comes to the turntable itself, you're really just paying for features and gizmos, the sound quality is in the cartridge (needle), if you're not buying one with an on-board preamp... Without a preamp, the output voltage of a turntable is very very low; you have to amplify it even before you amplify it. I use just a basic turntable with no preamp, a JVC A-A158, no frills other than an auto-return for when the record is over and an arm up & down control. I use a very nice cartridge though, an Audio Technica AT-92ECD. My preamp is awesome though, but I'm pretty biased; its a vacuum tube preamp I designed and built myself in my Advanced Linear Circuitry class in college.

I have over 100 albums, mostly punk and hardcore music from the early 80's up to now (they still release lots of punk on vinyl) and classic country that was my Grandma's (original pressing, LOTS of Johnny Cash).

I agree that the sound is primarily in the cartridge, but I also think there are issues relating to the build of the turntable itself.  I used to have my dad's old Gerard, which, despite having many whistles and bells I never used, was plasticky and prone to jumping the groove when the table was bumped the least little bit.

I now have a plasticky Denon, which tends to make vibrations in the room audible.  The whole thing is pretty resonant and, I fear, picks up a lot of sound in the room.  The nice thing about it are stop and start buttons that set/remove the needle and turn it on/off, recuding the wear and tear of setting it manually, or even with a lever.

Duals and Thorens are very solid.

I have so many of them, I keep on sizing down. I use them mostly for my sample-based music. I'm so obsessed with sample when I have a stack that I know is shit I still MUST go trough all of it, just in case.

I like going to the salvation army goodwill, or the record store at the train station, and picking up a few of the cheapest records they have, for around 1€/$ each. If I don't know anything about the albums or the artists, I buy something based on the cover art. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Universal Forum by Rasa (or the other way around, maybe)

Damn. Judging by the cover I was expecting some sort of tripped out 80's new age ambient crystallized healing music or something. Instead I get preachy cheesy pop ballads by swedish Hare Krishnas? Not cool.

The Mike Oldfield reminds me a lot of Eno's Another Green World.

I've stopped crate digging myself, in part because I  don't have the time and in part because any # of good Mp3 blogs simulate the experience of impossibly good thrift stores and church rummage sales. 

I'm esp. partial to the blog Holy Warbles.

not collectible, remastered

yeah that album is classic
as good as paid in full

Yeah I love vinyls! Much warmer sound. I've been collecting the grateful dead albums and I've nearly completed the studio album collection. I have some bootlegs and live albums, too.

If you want a really good album, get this:


It's Kingfish (self-titled), which was a side project of Bob Weir's in 1975. Fucking awesome music!
