Todays find(few pics)
    #1456328 -

Hi I found these puppies today and they are seriously HUGE, like massive some of them had caps about 28-30cm(about a foot) maybe bigger !
the one pictured is about 16cm(cap diameter) The big ones were just to big to bother bringing home. spore print is dark purple-black
Any help identifying them ? They were found in N.S.W Australia

if it was in nsw, i very much doubt it's a cubensis... looks like some form of amanita to me! could be deadly!

unlikely to be any cubensis in nsw atm, and am i right in guessing it wasnt found in cow poop?

don't eat it!

sorry if i've made a wrong ID, i'm fairly new to all this, however i've seen plenty of these around lately, and they sure as hell aren't active!

Amanitas have white gills and white spores.

Ok I will revise my statement... I think it is either Psilocybe cubensis or a very similar looking Stropharia.. thats my educated guess... Why do I say this?? The colour of the cap and its large size.. the membranous annulus, the dark purple spore print.. though habitat and blueing reaction would be the clincher.

I wouldn't rule out Psilocybe cubensis fruiting at this time of year..I mean only a month or so ago there were HUUGE flushes of them. I think that one is just an old last ditch effort to fruit...remember that cubensis has been found in Tasmania.

Like I said I wouldn't eat it..

Also, I wouldn't offer an identification unless I had reasons to believe it was the said species. At least I don't offer alternative identifications (such as Amanita) and then blatantly state that i don't have a clue..

I have been a mushie hunter for several years now and I'd like to think that I have at least a fair idea of what is what in our little neck of the woods...

Yeah i respect your opinion Mesq.

I have a new pic/print for you to ponder from a smaller mushroom.

How big can cubensis grow ? some of the mushrooms from this patch (there were heaps) Had caps as big as a dinner plate !

NExt time put a coin in the image for size. The largest cubie ever recorded is ten inches in Bob Harris' Growing Wild Mushrooms. Thats the size of a Long Playing Record 33 RPM.
In fact if you did have one that big you could most likely get in the Guinness Book of World Records.

I'd get right back out there and find it and photograph it right away.
.
I doubt if you found any cubes with a foot wide cap on P. cubensis.

They would not be able to hold theirselves up. They would bow just like most cubies do in cultivation because they are to heavy.

.

And why would one be too big to brinbg home. That does not make any sense.

Over the years I have nmet thousands of pickers, and everyo y one of them would bring a big one that big home and phoptograph it.

Oh yes, the annulus on the second image should have purple-chocolet spores all over it by now. IT appears to have already sporulated.

See the veil remnants in my photo below.

Thats how the annulus should look.

and another view and shroom with the ring. Yours is lacking.

The only mushroom I know of which resembles those would be Stropharia rugosoannulata. Could you show us what the base of the stem looks like (hopefully you didn't cut it off when you picked it)?

Happy mushrooming!

MJ : I didn't bring the big mushrooms home because i didn't know what they were and still don't. The place i got them from is locked and has security gurards it's kinda tricky to get them. i'm thinknig about going in there when the place is open and just asking them if i can take some photos.

Yes the annulus has turned a purple/dark colour now.
The top is very slipery when damp.

The base is much the same as the lower picture in your post. it get wider near the bottom.

If you want to verify the ID (which is always a good idea) you should find some text descriptions of the species and compare them in detail to your specimen(s). This species has a couple fairly distinctive things that you should see.

First, it usually has a somewhat odd odor. You should get in the habit of smelling mushrooms - lots of them have distinctive odors that really help in identification. Second, these usually have small rootlike bits coming out of the base of the stem - something most mushrooms don't have.

Note that this species is edible, but you should verify the identification yourself (not just using a photograph) before you consider eating it. If you decide to eat some, make sure you try a small piece (the size of your smallest fingernail), well cooked, first and wait overnight. If you don't get sick then you can try enough to use it as a side dish. You should actually try this process with any new mushroom species you eat - it will save you some unpleasantness if you misidentified it or you're allergic to it or something like that.

Glad to be of help.

Happy mushrooming!

I've seen these before too. They are NOT Cubensis, just in case there's any doubt. Dunno if they're poison or not, but they're definitely not cubes, I recognised it straight away.

I found them in NSW too, growing on pony poo. They are a serious look-a-like, but I'll bet they don't stain blue.

They may have some purple coloured "freckles" on the stem, around where the stem meets the cap?

Stropharia is a Genus, not a species, though i do believe it is a Stropharia.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
