Yeah I noticed that too. He kinda looks like a fruit though. A really brave a tough fruit who is really smart and can cut his own arm off.

Man that's tough shit to cut your own arm off with a dull pocket knife, but there are a few of those stories out there, and most experienced climbers have read them or heard them. It's a possibility that most good climbers realize in the back of their brain somewhere. Although, death, paralysis, broken limbs, frostbite, and brain damage from edima are far more common. I remember reading a story once about a climber doing a long, multi-pitch, off-width crack at high altitude somewhere, and he ran into an old hand stuck in the crack...

Ice climbers lose a lot of limbs, because ice can be very unstable, and a half-ton sheet of ice can cut through you like a big knife...

Most serious climbers will tell you it's worth it though. It's a great sport, and it offers many rewards. The adrenaline and endorphines alone, let alone the natural beauty of the outdoors, are far better then most drugs!

When I first heard that he cut his arm off I was thinking it must have taken forever to cut through the bone.

But the story says he broke the bone purposfuly before he cut it off.
I dont know if I would have thouoght off that.

Yeah, I thought that was very clever of him too, but I guess he had a while to think about it. I was pretty blown away by his recount of it. I'm not sure what I would have done in his shoes...

Of all the ways to spend your free time, rock climbing seems like one of the goofiest. You buy a ton of expensive gear and climb up a big dirty, dusty pile of rocks, only to climb back down again. The thrill of the whole thing is the very good chance that you will fall to your death. If that's someone's idea of a good time, I have no sympathy for them when they get maimed or killed.

Well his climbing days are over but still. He's a badass in my book.

Actually, after a full recovery and some special training, he'll be able to climb again, and he probably will if he really loves the sport. There are many amputee-climbers out there -- mostly ice climbers and mountaineers -- who still climb very actively. They can no longer climb at the same technical level they did before, but it can still be an extremely engrossing challenge, a great work out, a thrill, and a great activity to do out in nature.

Most of climbing, especially technical rock climbing, is a mental adventure -- conquering fear, making critical decisions under stress, and like chess, trying to look ahead, and make the correct decisions in route finding. It's a great physical workout, and as I said above one of the most satisfying natural highs out there -- if you like the sport.

I don't climb much anymore, but I climbed very heavily for a number of years, and I still think, that for me, it was one of the greatest sports ever, and something I may return to one of these days. Skiing is great too, but I really enjoyed my climbing years!

He can climb back up again someday and find his arm.

Well if you need to label them, I guess you could call them one of those touring hippie jambands. They play lots of styles of music..

Of all the ways to spend your free time, track racing seems like one of the goofiest. The same thing can be said for a lot of different things. Different strokes for different folks. Stop hatin'.

Harry's Circumcision - Reverie Gone Astray
by Lou Reed
?
Looking in the mirror Harry didn't like what he saw
The cheeks of his mother the eyes of his father
As each day crashed around him the future stood revealed
He was turning into his parents
The final disappointment
Stepping out of the shower
His hairline receding the slight overbite
He picked up the razor to begin his shaving
and thought oh I wish I was different
I wish I was stronger I wish I was thinner
I wish I didn't have this nose
These ears that stick out remind me of my father
and I don't want to be reminded at all
The final disappointment
Harry looked in the mirror thinking of Vincent Van Gogh
and with a quick swipe lopped off his nose
And happy with that he made a slice where his chin was
he'd always wanted a dimple
The end of all illusion
Then peering down straight between his legs
Harry thought of the range of possibilities
A new face a new life no memories of the past
and slit his throat from ear to ear
harry woke with a cough the stitches made him wince
A doctor smiled at him from somewhere across the room
Son we saved yourlife but you'll never look the same
And when he heard that, Harry had to laugh
And when he heard that, Harry had to laugh
Although it hurt Harry had to laugh
The final disappointment

That is a very shallow view of the motivation behind rock climbing.

The gear is expensive because it cannot fail or somebody dies. People spend money on expensive gems to make them look pretty, on expensive cars to make them look important, etc. Why is it so bad to spend money on something that will save your life when it is needed?

Climbing a pile of rocks is called bouldering, not rock climbing. Rock climbers scale verticle or inverted rock faces which can be anywhere from ~25 feet to several thousand feet in length. We also seldom climb back down the face we went up. There is usually an easy trail to follow down once you make it to the top. If we do have to go back down the way we went up, we usually rapel.

Every climber knows that there is a chance they will fall and die. Extreme measures are taken to prevent this from happening. We spend a lot of money on expensive equipment to protect our lives. We place protection wihle climbing to arrest a fall preventing rapid deceleration and death. We use a belay hooked into solid anchors. We double check each others knots, placements, anchors, etc. If we drop something we yell a warning to others climbing below us.

Death can happen to anybody at any time. Climbing is more dangerous than volleyball, but you can die doing either. Rather than flee from death, climbers respect the possiblity and overcome their fear of 'what if'.

The thrill from climbing comes from bettering yourself... knowing that you overcame your fears to acheive your goal of getting to the top. Knowing that you can reach deep within yourself and ignore the pain, ignore the skin and blood left on the rock face, ignore the fear, and focus on getting to the next hold. Knowing that you have the will to continue no matter what happens.

There is something magical when you are a couple hundred feet up, with nothing between you and the ground except the rope and protection that you have placed, when there are no other people around except your belay, when there is nothing but you and nature....

Hell yeah :-) very well put :-)

To rockclimd is to know yourself, not unlike tripping imo.
Safety = key, and mister one hand has hopfully learnt the importance of telling
some one your planned routes and time expected home before he goes out solo
again.

But in saying that i dont know all his story so maybe he was out for a long trip.
So no one missed him and sent out a rescue party.

To me rockclimbing has little to do with risking death and more to do
with the enjoyment of visiting beatuiful places you would other wise never see.

The equipment isnt actually that expensive in comparasion to other sports . i.e motor racing. In fact the most expensive piece is the ropes, and there only ?75
for a good dry 60 meter 11.Which depending on your fall rate will last a year :-)

Cutting your own arm of has to be a bitch though lol.

Seuss, Paid, well put guys!

There's nothing funner then being a "granite astronaut," spending all day in a dead vertical envrinment -- a tiny little spec on a huge granite wall extending hundreds if not thousands of feet out in all directions -- like being a spider on a wall!

Although sport climbing and mountaineering is cool too. I always wanted to do some ice climbing -- climbing frozen waterfalls -- but I never got the chance, and that shit is more dangerous...
