Anyone know anything about gemstones / fossils?

How can I find out what gemstones would be in my local area and how do I polish them or make them into things like chess pieces?

I also have a jurrasic coast and lots of fossils near me, ya think its worth collecting them to find rare ones and sell in a webshop or something?

Just trying to figure out what local resources I can gather and turn into goods. Seems like a good hobby and way for an old hippy to make a few pennies.

I got no idea how to start in this so maybe some knowledgeable folks here can give advice.

Two words:

YES
eBay

Check out what fossils fetch, you could make some sweet $$ there if you can achieve a high turnover. Give it a good sales pitch, telling what it is and a pallpark figure of how old it is. Make prices for the run of the mill stuff fairly low and put auctions on the better ones.

As a kid, paleontology was my thing (that was way before Jurassic Park btw) and if eBay had existed a lot of my $$ would have gone into fossils.

You need a tumbler to get them into polished gems. If you want to tell me approximate location I might be able to tell you whats in your area.

Great offer to the OP Hashbuble but gemstones unless he lives in a special area are quite labor intensive and generally fetch low prices. Tumbled gemstones are generally sold by the kilo for not too much, even the very beautiful ones like Tigereyes. (which I really wouldnt want to tumble as the tigereye effect is caused by asbestos)

The only sea fossils of any value are trilobites and they are pretty hard to find

I have a special place I like to get herkimer diamonds. Ive got a place to get beautiful blue celestite, emeralds and a few other things. Say he lived in australia he could get opals from lightning ridge. Jewelry is fun to make and sell on music tours and people always like if you found it yourself. Hand made and personaly found things are the future. You can use a site like Etsy to sell them to.

I'm south coast UK

I'm not 100% sure if its legal for me to collect the fossils here but I think it is because we used to do it with the school as kids.

if it's a jurassic coast he wont be finding any trilobites there. fish and complete crinoids can fetch $ also ammonites are nice to make into necklaces and such

I just went on EBay after this thread sparked some interest. It weird.. A dinosaur vertebrae might sell for $200.. but some T Rex teeth dont top $50. I suppose this is because teeth get replaced constantly unlike vertebrae. Anyways I found out their is a great place for Mammoth remains and Ice age dated arrow heads not far from my house. Its a state park so collecting isn't allowed.. Uh fuck that.

It seems though it all depends on the Dino species and bone piece as far as how much their worth. I think I would rather look for gold or rare gemstones but I don't live in a good place for either.

Nice1 if you find anything please do post pictures. And good luck. I might have to do this next summer when the ground isn't frozen.

Really? Two local rivers near my house are supposedly a hot spot for trilobites and crinoids, as well as bryzoa and brachiopods...

it all depends on what age the sedimentary rocks are in your area.
the reason i say he wont find any on the jurassic coast is because trilobites weren't around in the jurassic.
they disappeared in the great extinction of the permian. crinoid fragments aren't rare as they still exist to this day. but finding a complete fossilized one is pretty hard.

what like what?

trilobites are not the only sea fossils of any value and are not hard to find if you are in an area where there are present and you can identify what strata layer they are in.

Ammonite nautilus fossil, coelacanth fossil>trilobite.
