If you pay someone to give you a massage I would consider having a male do it. The girls are cute sometimes, but they have small hands and don't really work it as much as a guy will. Don't be homophobic, just have a guy do it and you will be happier as long as they know what they are doing. If you just want to go to get rubbed on by a girl I don't know what to tell you.

Even if it's an attractive woman? And I'm not even talking about the possibility of having her give you a sexual favor. An attractive woman who has a genuine interest in massage. I can't wait to meet a woman like that.

If an attractive woman approached me out of the blue and asked if she could massage me, sure as shit I'd say yes, platonic or not.

The place I was considering going to, it turns out, doesn't even have any male staff, so I'm gonna call around and see what my other options are.

With the discount I get it's only $40/hour though, so I'm considering going anyway and if it turns out innefective I can cut my losses and find somewhere else.

Is it standard practice to tip?

Mayeb you can meet a girl who's taking massage classes at some holistic health school and you become girlfriends with her and you get a grade A massage every night for free.

Yes, tipping is standard. One more vote for "don't be homophobic", but I wouldn't necessarily say to seek out a male massage therapist. As long as the therapist advertises something other than "Swedish/Relaxation Massage" or some spa shit, then you should be in good hands either way, male or female (pun not intended). Some of the best corrective work I've received has been from female therapists; knowing how to use your body efficiently is often more important that raw strength as a therapist.

"Deep Tissue" is kind of an umbrella term, but that's what it sounds like you're looking for. It may also be advertised as medical massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, muscle energy technique/MET or neuromuscular technique/NMT.

Don't go in with stupid misconceptions about getting a hand-job halfway through the massage, and you'll be fine. Yes, touch is highly sexualized for most people, but that goes away pretty easily as long as you don't get hung up on it.

Edit: one last bit of advice, find a private/self-employed therapist or small local business. Most "Massage Envy/Massage Heights" type chains pay their therapists like shit, and you definitely get what you pay for.

I've also been looking into getting a massage.

My back, neck, and shoulders have so much tension and so many knots built up I honestly think I would cry if I got an hour long massage...Just from the release of all that tension and having a back that doesn't have kinks and knots in it for the firs time ever. My back is fucked, I've had problems with it since elementary school.

Great thread.

Over the past year i've been building ALOT of tension in my neck and shoulders and would absolutely love to release it. I've been considering going to a masseuse for a good while, but keep putting it off. I feel "bashful" about the whole situation, not really sure about the dynamics of getting a massage works, and generally uncertain enough about the whole thing to avoid it all together.

I found reading everyones posts in this thread to be quite helpful.

- How often does one see a masseuse?
- How much do you tip for an hour (10% or...$5 or what)

I have a few masseuses in my neighbourhood, and have benefits which cover 80% of the cost, now i just need to find the time...

Also, would it be considered impolite to go in after work, before taking a shower?

Thats kind of gross right...?

I'd go once a week if I could afford it. Once a month is more realistic. Tips vary obviously, but $5-20 is probably average.

Therapists will very much appreciate it if you shower beforehand.

Wonderful, thank you - i was thinking of going once per month, it's more realistic with my schedule.

Also, what are the different types of massage, and do they work the whole body? Do you direct them, or do they figure out what they need to do to you?

ie. if i went in for a back massage, would they work my legs a bit too?

In my experience, you should direct them a little.  Tell them it's your first time getting a massage and you're not sure exactly what you need, but you feel tight in x places, and that you want the time split either as they see fit, or give them some idea.

You also don't really know if they're good the first time (unless you get recommendations).  You should probably tell them you want them to go pretty hard if you have deep knots.  I went to a shitty masseuse once and he did not go nearly deep enough.

I'd give you a session free of charge just to show you some ladies are capable of deep work.

Some of my most loyal clients are big guys with a lot of muscle to move around. You just haven't worked with a female therapist that has mad skills, keeps the table low and has solid upper body strength.

OP - find a therapist that does deep tissue and myofascial release. It's worth the money when you find someone with skills.
If you go to a spa, massage chain business, or chiropractic office - tip your therapist. Unless they are self employed, most massage therapists are sorely underpaid and likely on the verge of burnout.

There is something inherently more relaxing in a woman's touch too I think.

I think you missed the point several people have made that massage is generally not very relaxing.  They push HARD, and if you have knots, it will HURT.  It's not fun.

Re: Ever paid for a massage? [Re: pwnasaurus]

very deep therapeutic work can be relaxing, and needs to be to a degree.
You can't penetrate into the deeper levels of tissue until the exterior is relaxed. If the mind is busy, the body can't relax... so relaxation is a pretty important part of almost all bodywork.

Some therapists have a knack for going in slow, ripping the fascia up and melting adhesions away, all the while keeping the sensation level just on the verge of "hurts so good almost bad" so the recipient doesn't hold tension and try to protect the area being worked.
The next day is usually when it hurts the most.
The day after that, people feel awesome :super:

Massage should ideally never "hurt", per say, but yes, you are correct in saying that having corrective work done is definitely a different experience than massage purely for relaxation purposes. How much it will hurt (discomfort is a better word) depends on the skill of your therapist and how fucked up your soft tissues are. If you do experience any actual pain during a massage definitely let your therapist know. It doesn't take long to cause nerve damage, and a broken 12th rib sucks even worse.
