can someone please solve this math problem for me
    #15283382 -

so I get through every problem on my midterm in 25 minutes, then spend the last hour trying to figure out this problem. I could not get past this one part! it was so frustrating, I tried a million different ways,but I couldn't do it. When I got home it took me another 25 minutes to figure out, and I did but only with a calculator, which we were not allowed to have on the test. We didn't have to answer with a single number with decimals and what not, we could leave it as a fraction or as a fully simplified problem Anyways I could not figure out how to isolate x without a calculator to determine what the division of two logs changed to common base came out to.

anyways here it is

32-3x = 42x+1

so naturally, I take the common log of each side

log 32-3x= log 42x+1

by rule of logs, move the exponents out

(2-3x)log 3 = (2x+1)log 4---> 2-3x=(2x+1)log 4 ------------->  -----------------> >>
                                                          log 3

2-3x/2x+1 = log 4/ log 3. ----> this is where i got stuck. Without a calculator I couldn't get the exact number for "log 4/log 3" to which i could use to find multiply by the denominator on the left side, then isolate the variables and constants on one side.

when i got home i figure this out

log 4/log 3 =1.261 so now my equation is very workable ---------------->

1.261 = (2-3x)/(2x+1)  --------> 1.261(2x+1)= 2-3x) ------------> 2.522x + 1.261= 2-3x ----->>

>>>  - .478x = 0.739 -----> .739/-.478= -1.52    x = -1.52

now plugging in 3 2-3(-1.52)= 42(-1.52)+1 = 3-2.56=4-2.04

=> .0600 = .05912    so basically correct, would of been closer if i had used more decimal points

how would you have solved this without a calculator?!? I bet it was right in front of my face the whole time and I'm just missing it or over thinking it

Just set log4/log3 to a constant called C. Then once youve isolated x on one side of the = sign, calculate the result and fill in log4/log3 for C.

i.e. (2-3x)/(2x+1)=C

2-3x = 2Cx+C

then combine the shit

2-C=3x+2Cx

2-C = x(3+2C)

(2-C)/(3+2C) = x

then in your calculator plug in for C

x = 0.133631072

and wait, so there are multiple answers? cause we got 2 different ones, I guess two answers (one above 1 and below 1 ) makes sense

Couldn't you also have done change of base to the log 4/log3 ?

I messedd around a little bit with that but I couldnt get anywhere..  Do you have a more specific idea of what to do?

God its been awhile, uhm.

Maybe you could do them to the base of .5 if that is allowed. Then you are effectively square rooting one, but idk what the square root of 3 is without a calculator.

Sorry, but I'm really not much help with this stuff seeing as I never really enjoyed or saw the point in math like this (at least for me).

I got the same answer as Chespirito.

Are you sure your teacher wanted a numeric answer even though you had no calculator?  I would guess that having an expression involving a logarithm would be sufficient.  :shrug:

yeah he wasn't looking for a numerical answer, I just couldn't figure out how to solve for x without knowing the value for log4/log3.. too bad. it seems pretty obvious now. weird that I got -1.52 when you guys got .33

Logarithms are used all over the place.  In economics, business, engineering and science.

In the past, before calculators, regular people had to use them to do simple arithmetic.  The slide rule is based off logarithms and their rules.  But when calculators were invented their use for non-math people dropped significantly.  Still, they are vitally important to many disciplines and a staple of algebra.

The fire has many things to teach.
But so does the human experience.. which is like fire, sometimes you just need to stoke the coals and sometimes you just need to add a log or reposition the log matrix. But a well built fire will be much more self-sustaining than a poorly built one, and they all need love to grow. And don't fuck around or your might burn yourself. Must always respect the fire. - Shroomism

nothing because you're wrong

2 of the answers are 25% and there's also a 50% and 60% option

the correct answer is not listed which in my case would be 100% becasue I'm never wrong :smirk:
