Yes, I'm shedding tears over MATH
    #3186200 - 09/27/04 02:08 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Everyday I come home from college, I cry.

The reasons are often not well defined. Usually it is because I feel frustrated about my math class.

I have a really difficult time doing math. I went through 3 geometry teachers in high school and eventually they just stuck me in a MMA class. There is something wrong with my brain. I have a really difficult time putting two and two together and the worst part is that I really try but can't seem to grasp the most basic of math concepts. It really upsets me because I feel like I'm an idiot. The only way I know I'm not a complete retard is because I do unnaturally well in English. That's the only reassurance I have that I'm not a total imbecile.

I don't know why I'm posting this. I guess because I'm sad right now and I want to see if anyone can relate.

Woefully yours,

*me*

Left Brain, Right brain.

You my friend, are a right brain  As am I.

When it comes to math, it's wierd. I can stare at a question that should be easy enough to solve, but things just aren't going round in my head. It just won't go through, unless I try really really hard. I am horrible at math, but I excell in more creative areas such as writing and art. As do you I'm sure

If you care to delve into this, I'm sure a google on the topic of "Right brain left brain" should lead to something more informative. I know of it because they taught us this in my careers/civic class in high school.

Don't fret. Some folks, myself included, simply can't wrap their heads around mathematics, so at least your not alone. Perhaps a little trick that I always use might help you, rather than focusing on the problem itself, concentrate on the solution. When I do that, I find it easier not to become overwhelmed, and I've learned to love the feeling I get when I finally reach the solution.

The thing about left/right brain problems is not that your left brain can't do the task, it's that your right brain will not get out of the way to let it work (and visa versa). I think that if you can find some exercises to turn off the right side of your brain while you do math, you would have fewer problems.

 I can relate. If I read a really great book on quantum physics though, I LOVE math!  It just has to be interesting.  The way it's normally presented, to us right-brainers, is so extensively dry as to be inedible. Good luck though. Maybe you could find a really great tutor to help make it more juicy for you!

i enjoy math because i find it so two-dimential, if you will. I mean it's either right or wrong. None of this creative bullshit that i can't do at all. Not to say that I can't write a decent paper on something, but usually i just can't figure out a way to approach the topic in a creative matter.

I enjoy math as well....maybe some people should lay off some of the drugs for awhile and maybe the math will be easier

I've heard conspiracies that our education system surreptiously educates girls to be worse at math than guys. among other things.

ah ellemy sucks don't it? i too am horrible at math and about cried because of it the other day, i took an 8 question exam, anwsered 3 questions and wrote "I have no idea" for the rest, my grade was right at a 70% before that and now there is really no way I can pass so i have to withdrawl :frown: worst part is it's only intermediate algebra and i need calculus for my major :frown:

I think the biggest problem is just making math harder than it really is. If you perceive that math is going to be hard it will be, at least to you.

The best thing to do is just practice. Once you have certain things down the rest just comes naturally. I hade troubles with just some of the beggining stuff like algebra, but after that you get into the fun stuff like trigonometry and advanced algebra where it then becomes a fun-puzzle to figure out.

Like you i suck at math. I think it has something to do with me being a leftie.
I have taken all the classes i needed to get in to college but i can safely say i still suck at math.

I had to device my own system of learning. Some left handed people think more in symbols then right handed so i did a lot of complicated conversions that made more sense to me.

I can even do multiplication, addition, and subtraction in my head with fairly large numbers. Its not that I'm a genius or anything i simply "cheat" by drawing a mental picture of the numbers and calculate them like i would on paper. Neat party trick.

You'll get throught it Ellemy. Math was NOT my thing in college either. I had to take only one math class to meet requirements but it was bad, some Trig course. I ended up with a C when I deserved an F. Thank God for curves. It turned out most of the people in the class were as lost as me. Just talk to your professor and get as much additional help as you can. And even if you get a D, you still pass. Just ask questions until you get it. You WILL get it eventually. And think about how good it'll feel to be done with math forever. Hopefully you don't have to take more than two or three math classes to meet requirements.
