Well today was supposed to be the day that I was steralizing some 1/2 pint jars, it didn't exactly work out good, actually it didn't work out good it all, it went horrible.
First off, I mixed all the verm and brf, and then added water, but I used tap water. So I dumped it all and started over since I wanted to use spring water. I mixed up another bowl, just enough for 8 1/2 pints, and again added tap water by accident. Dumped all that out, and made another bowl of verm/brf, but this time I added the spring water. So, I put water in the PC, and a wet rag on the bottom, and stacked 8 jars into the PC, but with the rag, the PC wouldn't fit all the jars. Since I had limited time, and needed these jars to be finished today, I just used paper towel instead of the rag(oops). After about 20 mins of pressure cooking I smell something that smells like burning, I figured the paper towel must have gotten a little burned, so I just let it go hoping it would be alright. After 45 mins, I depressurized, and opened the pc, only to have a huge ammount of flames hit me in the face. After brushing off what was left of my eyebrows, I checked the jars. OOPS, I forgot to put tinfoil on top so the jars didn't fill with water. So now that all the 8 jars were ruined, I took them out so I could empty them, the top four were fine, but the last 4 broke all over the floor. I put all the pieces into a trashbag, with the wasted verm/brf, and while taking it outside, it melted through the trashbag, and went all over the floor. So now I have 8 jars left from 12, and a limited supply of verm.  Oh well.

BTW, can't you just sterilize water in the microwave before adding it to your mixture?

I strongly suggest NOT working on jars while stoned. Save the bowls for when you're finished

yes but colonization is extremely faster with tap water (in afoaf's case tap water) and it doesnt matter what you do to the jar beforehand because it all gets sterilized in the end anyway.

Oh really, thanks for the tip, I'll remember that. Also, when taping the holes on the jar lids, is it ok to use duck tape or scotch tape, or does it have to be masking tape. And one more thing, do the lids have to be air tight, cause I got 2 piece lids, and after poking holes with a hammer and nail, they got a little bent, and dont fit perfectly.

Hey; It's a learning experience. Their will be good days too. I wouldn't have dumped it just because i used tap water though. Better luck next time.

Thought I remembered someone saying tap water was no good. Oh well, mistakes happen. The only thing that really pisses me off, was cleaning up the same mess twice, and the fact I lost 1/3 of my jars, and 1/3 of my yield.

There are easy ways to expand yeild though. I wouldn't fret over 4 lost jars.

Heh, I'd say that working on shrooms stoned for the first few times is a bad idea too :P The best thing, every single thing you fuck up(believe me, this comes from TONS of experience fucking things up) is just another thing you won't fuck up next time. As for the type of water, I've never really noticed a difference, search the posts for "A note on additives to jars" or something, and you'll see a post I started a while ago. The rice water addition does help

i think its stamets that recommends the best water substrates is water leeching from a compost pile or fresh spring, as they both are high in nutrients, and yes, that rice water seems amazing! i would think the same thing with the water run off from pasteurizing poo.
