Hello
My buddy about 3 months ago made three casings out of vermiculate. He used a cool mister and an aqua bubbler (which was always on) for humidity and air circulation. The mister came on 8 times a day for 15 min. He used BRF and Verm for his substrate and never had any problems with mold until the 3rd or 4th flushes. He was very careless in terms of sterility. And by careless I mean, breathing on the casing trays, never spraying lysol in the air before opening the terrarium, not using H2O2 for his bubbler or mister. Now he is on his next batch. He is using birdseed and a mixtgure of peat moss/ verm and oyster shell for his casing. Overly careful, he sprays the air with lysol, uses H202 in his water sources and tries not to breathe on these things. Within the 1st week, he has already been struck with green mold and cobweb. What the fuck!, he shouts. Why is this happening? Could it be that his casing layer was a little too moist, and by moist I mean it had more than the usual drip drip content than it should have? Or is it something else?
fuck shit

oyster shell alone is probably not be enough of a ph buffer.

a few casings have been harvested. they caught the bug either mid harvest or post. the oyster shell shouldn't be an issue.

Yes.

Maybe try less water and adding hydrated lime as per the 50/50+ casing tek.

i mean that oyster shell alone probably isn't enough to increase ph and therefore reduce the chances of contams. if your ph is low, contams have an easier time and therefore you are more likely to contam. if the ph is higher, contams have a harder time and therefore you are less likely to contam, regardless of when the contam happens after casing.

how can he go about testing the Ph of his casing layer and what pH should it be at to reduce contams yet not to burn the myclium. Hydrated lime is similar to calcium carbonate if I am not mistaken. His oyster shell already has calcium carbonate in it.

the faq is bullshit. yeah it says to keep it at 7 ph but it doesn't give any info on how to test. he used the ph test strips for the pool but they were shit. they kept giving him a reading well over 8 or 9 ph whereas this other ph tester, one used to test soils kept it at a solid 6.5 - 7.5 ph.

Use the kit for soils...and speak kindly of the FAQ. Respect, man, respect.
