AFOAF recently embarked on an endeavour to isolate mescaline crystals from the san pedro cactus.  This was his first attempt.  Today he was rewarded upon returning home by the sight of a dish full of yellow mescaline hydrochloride crystals.  My friend is ecstatic!  His powers of chemistry are astounding and enormous!  Life is wonderful! :smile:  And DAMN it was TOO EASY.  No defatting , almost no filtering....it was a cakewalk.

following the tek outlined at nan's nook (http://www.nansnook.com/)
1. cored the cactus, putting all the outer skin and green layer slices into a blender and turning it into mush.
2. extracted the cactus mush with acidified water (using muriatic acid)
3. basified the acidic extraction and added xylene to extract the alkaloids from the aqueous layer.
4. removed the xylene layer, and put it in a separate jar. added to this xylene layer squirts of acidified water, until the water layer at the bottom tested acidic.
5. removed the xylene layer and put it back in the jars with the cactus slime. took the water layer from the previous step, poured it out in a dish, and put a fan over it. the next morning - crunchy yellow brown mescaline hydrochloride crystals.

hypothetically, this easy procedure leads to a rather pure crystallized product.
