I hear that......  I am unsure about the process a this point, I am not informed enough.  as well as I do not think at this age I would expect a partner to do such things.  Maybe if and when marriage comes around.

what if the condoms were like the same probability that god exist, could we swap out the condoms, stopping global warming and thereby prove god exist?

Weird. I was just thinking about this last night (as I was throwing away a condom). I think that there are more substantial ways to focus our environmental tendencies towards, but it obviously does create waste. Unfortunately, I don't want a kid yet and I do want to have sex so I will probably continue to be selfish. If there are more environmentally friendly, effective, non-hormonal forms of birth control out there I would be happy to hear about them.

My GF uses the depo provera shot. She has to get a shot once every three months, and has no noticeable side-effects (besides loss of period because the shot works by tricking her body into thinking it's pregnant). Only contraceptive we've used in 3 years. :feelsgoodman:

For me atleast, there are alot of things I could do to help the environment that would be much greater. However, the little things count too:awesomenod:

Uhm, aren't most condoms latex?  And isn't most latex 100% biodegradeable?

I guess the only real waste you get from condoms would be the wrapper, which are tinfoil like and not biodegradeable.

If they changed the packaging for condoms, I'm sure it would be even less polluting.

That's all I wanted to get at:  Latex biodegrades.

That can't be healthy.

Over what timespan does latex biodegrade?
Doesn't refining latex require stuff like oil and naptha?

I'm sure its requirements are less hazardous than the production of hydrocarbon polymers from unrefined crude oils.

Oh, and about 6 months for the standard latex balloon to decay, about as long as a leaf in dry environment.

Condoms that are meant to break down...hmm I have a feeling it's more complex than that.

It's a property of latex.  It doesn't take a genius to know that latex biodegrades.

I am sure it does, but you think there is no chance there are other factors that keep that condom safe for X amount of time while it is still 'active'?

I'm well aware of latex's basic information.

Yes, it's kept in a foil package with a lubricant that protects it from drying out.  As long as a condom remains in its foil package and isn't stored in a warm place (like a wallet), then it should be fine until the expiration date.

As I mentioned earlier, the worst environmental impact from condoms is the wrapper.

I'm also well aware of how to keep condom safe. Thank you though.

You'd make a lot of money creating a safe, bio degradable wrapper.

They add Lube + a hardening agent (so they can last with rough friction) that renders the latex non-biodegradable.

They still biodegrade, it just means that there might be harmful contaminants left behind as well, but the latex will degrade.

Most condoms sold in the United States are made of biodegradable latex. However, they also contain preservatives and hardening agents to make sure the rubber can withstand a fair amount of friction. Those additives also make it harder for the condoms to break down in the landfill. Lambskin condoms are biodegradable, but chemical additives may inhibit the process. Naturalamb, the only widely available animal-based brand in the United States, does lubricate  the lamb intestines they import from New Zealand, so it's unclear just how easily its product breaks down. Natural condoms, however, are still likely to be a greener choice than latex condoms, and are equally as effective at preventing pregnancy. (Polyurethane condoms, which make up about 3 percent to 4 percent of U.S. sales, won't break down at all.)
