i have had wonderful success just putting the jars on top of my dryer in a dark laundry room and turning the dryer on twice a day

A friend of mine bought a heater that automatically turns on when the temp. gets below a certain level. Then he put the heater and a digital temp. in his closet and within a day had figured out the right setting.

The fish-tank heater is not impractical. As long as you put a blanket or an old jacket or something over the cakes, they will be insulated enough to be regulated by the floor heater.

Hello Road and all,

My friend is at this stage and has a question. He has seen the ol' put the tub in the tub with the bottom tub having the submersible fish tank heater
BUT the idea of 50% humidity for the jars has him stumped. If the jars are sealed wouldn't the jars have enough humidity in them for colonization? Why do some here put the jars in Ziplock bags and then put them in the top tub? Wouldn't that keep the humidity out? Thanks.....

My friend is using an incubator for the first time and colonization is going great. Opaque plastic container partially filled with water (with a dash of bleach to inhibit contam growth) and 50w fishtank heater. To be on safe side, container was lined with foil to prevent melting of plastic near heater. This also minimizes heat loss / increases efficiency.

Second container within contains the PF-style jars. Covered top with foil to prevent excessive dripping on lids. Temperature remains a very constant 84 or so (easily regulated with the heater).

Humidity within this chamber is high, but that's not really relevant at this stage -- the jars are closed.
