Incubator fish tank heater maybe a problem!?
    #1396497 - 03/20/03 08:33 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

My buddy's grandmother was wondering. She just recently bought two Rubbermaid rough neck buckets to make an incubator for a "Middle man incubator" wear you place a fish tank heater at the bottom. She being semi smart for her age filled the bottom bucket with water and placed the heater inside to test the heater and see if it would heat the water. Now this heater she tells me looks bigger then the once pictured on PF Tek for simple minds (the most watts she could find) . The light saying the heater is 80 degrees F turns off but the water is not warm at all only the very bottom of the bucket on top is just warm. Her question for you who have used this tek is their a problem with the buckets? just need another heater or is she just paranoid. Also she tells me she keeps the bucket on a raised plat form off the title floor. The floor is cold to the barefoot. any suggestions would be great the info on simple mind was to general, She does not want to take chances.

try putting the setup on a blanket or one of those sweaters your buddy's grandma gave you for christmass.

can you ask her how many watt's the heater is? how long has it been on? and what temp is it set at?

Did you actually measure the temperature inside of the closed incubator?

no but I am postive granny would'nt lie. The question is more about the buckets and the heater (or heaters) people used who have done this or what they would do in her shoes.

Well... flying squirrel doesn't use submersible fish tank heaters..but he uses regular fish tank heaters in jars of water.. and he found the default setting did not get the heat up high enough to heat the incubator to 86F. So what he did was to turn to dial all the way up, then pull it off and put it back on facing the minimum setting.. thus allowing him to crank up the heater higher than default will allow. Flying squirrel does not think granny can do this with the submersible type, but she can try.

200 Watts should be more than enough. Try setting a thermometer in your incubator, put together as it would be for the jars, and see how warm it gets inside. It may surprise you.

put a small water pump in there to mix up the water and you get more even heating not just heat from the bottom up.
