Re: Petri Dish -10% success (moved) [Re: Alan Rockefeller] * 1

Just wanted to throw it out there, gloveboxes might be a better option when working with agar, especially with noobies, since the potential to open the petri dishes with contaminants in front of a flowhood as well as incorrectly opening any lid in front of a laminar flow will push particulates into the agar dish or jars.  Still air boxes seem much more convenient for agar work, especially if you're dealing with petri dishes that could be contam'd.  (The second you open one of those in front of a flow, you blow mold/contams spores all over the room).

Just wanted to throw out there that as fancy and cool as laminar flowhoods are, you can get away with using a still air box just as easy, if not easier.  Flowhoods are a bit pricier to build than a good still air box, considering that good HEPA filters that match the specs of large boxes are quite expensive, and you have to match up the pressure from the fan to the filter, or you won't even have laminar flow.

Just two cents to throw out there to anyone who hasn't used a still-air or glovebox and wants to jump right onto a flowhood...

Oh, and RR, you should get yourself a stirplate and add it to your video.  The best way to cool agar off and not worry about clumping is to have it constantly stirring.  Makes agar prep really easy, while the agar is stirring I can clean up before the pour without having to worry about uneven cooling.
