Watering Loph. williamsii (pre-dormancy, post arrival)

So I've tried to post this before and I think it either keeps getting deleted or I just don't know how to start a topic...or find a previous one for that matter

But my question is a little more specific then just regular watering schedules and such, I know that watering late in September isn't good and can cause root rot this close to the plant's entering dormancy anyways, this is the situation.

I will be acquiring a few mature (flowering) Loph. plants within the next week or two and will be transplanting into a basic soil consisting of 1/3 sand, soil, limestone.  I know it is pertinent to water plants when they are being transplanted, however, I don't know whether or not to water these as the temperatures here are getting into 50-65F at night.  Could watering this close to inducing dormancy have a potential of causing root rot?  Or do I run an even greater risk by not watering them at all when I transplant.  The Loph. plants are arriving bare root.

If I have posted this several times before I apologize, when I looked to find the thread(s) earlier I couldn't find them...

I wouldn't imagine it to be too much of an issue as long as you make sure the water isn't excessive. If the Loph looks like it wants water, give it some; if it seems healthy/happy without it and wants to go dormant, let it.

There would be no risk to not water them until next spring, be sure they are potted into a dry mix. Cactus don't like to be watered as soon as they are potted, if any of the roots get damaged during the repot and then watered, it will encourage rot. Usual practice is to let them sit after a repot for a couple of weeks before starting to water, and by then we will be approaching october and the level of risk only goes up.

But this all depends on your climate. We are starting to get chilly nights here and high humidity. If you are warm, bright and dry air still at this time of year then a small dribble won't hurt but not really needed.

transplant to bone dry soil. let them sit there til spring.

cacti are very easy species to maintain and do not require much in the way of help.

they have been doing fine for thousands of years without our help.

they will get dehydrated and almot look dead. they are not. that fat taproot serves its purpose. keep them alive in times of drought.

Thank you all for the replies, very helpful information.  Just one other question, which has probably been answered here before but, is there a certain type of sand which is suitable / not suitable to use or does it not matter?

i use home depot/lowes sand. all purpose sand is good also. stay away from beach sand.
