lophophora williamsii (pic added)
    #2596310 - 04/23/04 11:12 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

A friend was recently telling me that a friend of hers recently saw a few lophs growing and her friend was curious about the way that they appeared...

I was told that the cacti are 2 years old and that while they look very healthy i.e., firm, nice green color, 1.5"-2" tall... they look more like pencils in shape & diameter than the typical bulbous look one normally associates with lophs.

I was told that the growing conditions are shaded sun, water when very dry with the exception of winter when they are not watered for about 4 months.

Today I saw photos, sorry, I don't have copies yet, but I'm curious: is it normal for 2 years old lophs to have the shape of pencils rather than that of balls? If not, any ideas why they may be growing as described?

i've got a few ungrafted 2 year old lophs that are more columnar shaped than buttons, but they are lophs still as they have all the other characteristics. Has to do with some early lighting conditions - sometimes too much shade - and some extra humidity.

With the pic added, any suggestions? They live on a book shelf under a window. Indirect sun light.

With more sun they will eventually fill out. Just introduce additional sunlight gradually to avoid sunburn.
