In order to write a great book you need to figure out your main story first.

Do a graph from start to finish and only write the big events and the timeline.

After that, you need a secondary story that converges with the main one afew times. The more secondary story the better.

Once you have the general idea of when and where main characters cross their path, its much easier to fill in the gaps. Heres a complicated example of what I mean:
