Many years ago when I was still kind of witchy, I used to keep the ticks I twisted off my dog, bag them up and put them in the freezer hahahahaha, I figured they might come in handy if anyone pissed me off...Found this big mother sheep tick on him once too, was saving that one for a real fuck head!

Long since been thrown away, just crazy shit I did when I was young.  Was never spiteful enough to actually use them, I think it just gave me emotional security aye, like insurance.

They are not smart enough to know.. Their brains are to small to think of anything apart from 'collect food for queen, build nest, etc. If this wasnt true, you'd have ants commiting homicide on other ants, and doing other semi-inteligant things

But thats just my theory.. Im probably wrong

i think they probably have being/consciousness just like we do, only not the ability to contemplate it.  So it's just like being a human but you can't think "i'm a human."  I mean, flies have really good eyesight.  WTF.

I've been told my numerous people (and I know this is a tad different from insects, but still) that crabs don't feel any pain at all.

Well, I saw a live crab get boiled alive, and that motherfucker definitely felt pain. Soon as they put him in the pot poor little dude was going nuts trying to get out.

Its instinct to attack different ant colonies, they do communicate with each other with pheromones and shit, and they can sense weather or not other ants are with a different queen

i think

Ants, animals, insects, basically all non-human entities on this planet are simply aware. Humans, on the other hand, are self-aware.

And enslave the other ants depending on the species. There are also ant species that farm mould for food, another type farm aphids. Ants are some cool little critters.

it's pheremones that allow for some communication as well as identification
but they also communicate in other ways, much like bees, ever seen a bee do
it's little dance to tell the others where food can be found? bees in fact
can use vector calculus in order to give those direction which takes into
account direction, distance and even the position of the sun and landmarks

Kids smoke ants in the middle east to get high....
Quote:
More than a third of children and some as young as 13 have smoked the native samsum ant as a substitute for illegal substances such as marijuana, a senior UAE health official has warned. Smoking the red ant gives a similar sensation to smoking marijuana and sniffing glue because of the high concentration of formic acid found in the ants. It is not illegal to smoke the ants, and a small packet is said to sell for Dh400 in Dubai.

"People smoke the ants because they are cheaper and safer - in the eyes of the law - than smoking narcotics," said a senior police spokesman. "It is also widely available, if not easily purchased." Formic acid, from the Latin word for ant, formica, is a combustible liquid that produces poisonous gases when heated up. Health professionals say the long-term effects of smoking the red ants could vary from lung fibrosis to kidney failure and damage to the central nervous system.

The Ministry of Health has not yet conducted research on the effects of smoking the ants. "We are well aware this practice exists. More than a third of teenagers have tried it and some as young as 13," said Dr Wedad Maidoor, the head of the ministry's tobacco control team. "However, our research only identifies the prevalence and not the side-effects of the practice because we have only recently become aware of it."

She believes the youth are smoking the samsum ant because it is a legal alternative to marijuana. "The only thing we can do is include this practice in our new anti-smoking campaign, which is aimed at young adults and teenagers. But we need to understand more about it before launching a campaign," she added. The samsum ant's poison gland holds formic acid, a chemical that smells like vinegar and is used by the ants to kill their prey and to ward off attackers.

When they bite, formic acid causes necrosis or deadening of the tissues. Mohammed al Ali, 27, believes the trend started with labourers from the subcontinent who roll the ants into their bhindis - pure tobacco cigarettes rolled up using a tobacco leaf. "It's a social thing for Indian workers," the Emirati said. "Go to Satwa Square and they are sitting there smoking the ants they rolled up into their bhindis.

"It's as easy as picking up the ants, crushing them and then sprinkling them like you would do with marijuana over your tobacco. Then you get high," added Mr Ali, who said he did not know anyone who had tried to smoke the ants. Two young Emiratis, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the ants were collected, ground down and left to dry before being smoked in pure form, either in a roll-up or a pipe.

They said they had not tried it, but had seen others doing it. "Kids just roll it up without any tobacco and smoke it," said one. Dr Riham Ammar, a pulmonologist at Jebel Ali International Hospital, Dubai, believes those who smoke the ants need urgent help. "The samsum ants are high in formic acid, which is extremely harmful when inhaled," he said. "Smoking them could lead to lung fibrosis, lung cancer and damage to the central nervous system.

"It's like committing suicide." The ants were not chemically addictive, he added, but those who smoked them were psychologically addicted to the effect. "People smoking the ants experience sensations associated with smoking cannabis and sniffing glue," Dr Ammar said. He warned that breathing formic acid could irritate the nose, throat and the lungs, causing coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

Short-term effects when exposed to formic acid include nausea, headaches, dizziness and vision disturbance. "It could also damage the kidneys," he added. Formic acid is used to make textiles, paper, leather, fumigants, pesticides and solvents, and in electroplating and silvering glass. It is a corrosive chemical and skin contact can severely irritate and burn the skin and eyes.

I love insects and spiders and their fucked up world. A spider and her family have set up a web in my kitchen, between two vitamin pill jars. They are my allies against the fruit fly menace, I let them eat their flies in peace.

Searched for some answers here... Makes sense to me!

Do ants feel pain?

Quote:
Not likely- The lowest animals on the phylogenetic scale that we know feels some pain are fish. Pain is a complex system that requires a fair number of neurons and an interpretation network...there has to be a place in the brain that gets the information from pain sensors, and interprets it- There is no reason for an ant to feel pain, since pain is a way of warning an animal to stop doing what it is doing, to protect itself- Ants, especially, and bees and other social insects, are hard-wired to not be concerned with their individual survival in order to protect the colony. A sense of pain would be a very damaging thing for the colony as a whole, since it would decrease the ability of the ant to fight to the death. So, both for reasons of logic based upon ant lifestyle, and because the ant brain and nervous system is so simple, it is very unlikely that ants feel pain.\
*edit* there is a mistake in one of the answers above- They do have a very simple sensory system, but one cannot know if they have "pain" receptors. A receptor is a receptor-what it signals to the brain is decided on by the wiring of the brain, not by what type of receptor it is. Neurons are like wires and sparks...they could signal anything, depending on how they are wired.
Another edit- It has not been proven that everything feels pain-it could not be proven, because it would require us to know how these animals interpret things, and we have no idea how to do that. I do research on pain pathways-it is arrogant for us to say we know what animals feel or think-the truth is, we have no idea. The only way we can estimate whether an animal feels pain is to analyze the size of the brain and the pathways, determine if a sense of pain would be useful to them, and make a best guess.
