Yeah, well, that too, but mercury content is something that is monitored very closely in fish. As long as a pregnant woman doesn't eat fish from suspect sources all day, every day, the child will be fine. The mercury thing is very much overrated, in my opinion. There's a huge difference between slight exposure and the extent of exposure as in e.g. the Minamata case in Japan in the 1950s.  The major risk is parasites, really.

I worked in a fish and chips restaurant for a couple years.  We served wild Atlantic cod only.  Going through about 40 pounds of fish a day, five days a week, I would find maybe 1-2 worms a week on average.  Finding them is absolutely revolting and I understand where your coming from.

I come from a commercial fishing family.  I have been told that the older the fish, the more likely it may be to have parasites.
