less substrate=less colonization time?

I've been pondering an experiment. It seems logical to assume that 1 cup of cooked rye would colonize faster than 2 cups of cooked rye. So, in theory, you would be able to get mushrooms faster (by reducing colonization time) if you sterilize 20 or so half pint jars of rye (instead of the usual 1 pint jar), and case the jars. Can anyone verify my theory, or provide some insight?

I've never used half pint jars with rye, but I don't see why your experiment wouldn't work. I just might try that myself. If you decide to do this, post your progress.

In the interest of science, I believe my accomplice is going to attempt a grow to test this theory. He will make several 1/2 pint casings, and a few pint or two pint casings. It will be our fourth grow, first attempt with grain though. It should go well, being as we've only had one fucked up grow. I'll update sometime next week maybe.

When my friend first began working with grains he had a bunch of 1/2 pint jars left over from his BRF experiments. He used these for awhile before buying pints.

In his experience it does indeed cut colonization times and produce fruits more quickly. The drawback is that you have to fuck around with twice as many jars and increase the risk of contamination by doing twice as many g2g transfers.
