Migraines, Mushrooms, LSD, and.....
    #14956842 -

Hey Virtual Friends & Community,

Let me introduce myself first...I'm Aria.  I'm from California, but I live in NYC.  Also, I suffer from chronic, extremely debilitating migraines.

I read an article a few days ago that said that LSD was originally designed as a migraine drug, but that when it was deemed illegal by the government, it was, of course, taken off the market.  I started doing some research and I came across some articles about psychadelic mushrooms and migraines as well...sounds like some studies have shown that those can also help!  And when I say "help," I don't mean "help" the way a painkiller helps, or even the way that a triptan medication helps...I mean, people seem to say that these different hallucinogenic substances either healed them completely of their migraines or SERIOUSLY reduced the severity and frequency of the attacks for an extended period of time.  A lot of people seem to say that their headaches went away for at least 3 months!!!  I can hardly even imagine 3 months without getting a migraine...it sounds like a dream to me.  However, this is the internet, and people post all kinds of things..so...I wanted to post here and see if anyone had personal stories on this topic that they might be willing to share....
....Anyone?

If you have migraines and you've tried mushrooms and/or LSD...did it help?  Did you have to do it more than once for it to help?  Was the "trip" like other people's trips, or was it different somehow because of your migraines? (I'm asking this because as a person with migraines with aura, I kinda "hallucinate" all the time, without any drugs at all - sometimes it's just cool patterns and flashing lights, and I've also gotten that 'Alice in Wonderland' experience, where the room gets HUGE and the TINY...it's weird...and it would be fun if it didn't mean that I was going to get an excruciatingly painful headache in a few minutes...)

Also, has anyone tried it and found that it DIDN'T help...?  If so, were you at least out of pain WHILE the drugs were in your system...?

And lastly, for people who did find that it helped, what amount did you consume and was it a particular kind...?  And what environment were you in?  Do you think that stuff matters when it comes to what the lasting effects of it are going to be...?

Anyway, I hope to hear from some of you soon!

Thank you so much for sharing your stories and your thoughts!!

Xo,
Aria

Hi Aria,

I don't mean to brash but you should do some research into what a psychedelic experience entails psychologically.  Yes, there might be some correlation between the chemical properties of these 5-ht2a antagonists that might affect certain kinds of perceived migraines, but the consequences of these drugs can be both adverse and enlightening.  They are very powerful psychoactive agents, and can severely alter your perception of reality.  Have you any experience with similar types of drugs before?  IMO I feel that alot of the physical "healing" properties of these drugs are the result of dealing with psychological problems, i.e., that is due to the mindset that these drugs can induce and the resulting user's choices, they can affect his or her mentality and thus influence nervous problems that might trigger head-aches.

If you've never taken one of these drugs before, let me say that there is NO WAY to prepare you for it.  Things you take for granted, without ever consciously being aware of them, get stripped away.  Familiar social constructs disappear, perceptions can be affected to the extreme, etc...You might just discover something you about yourself you might not be aware of.  This can be very disheartening and scary.  Be careful, and do the research!

If afterward you feel that this is the path for you, by all means, it has helped many psychosomatically and emotionally, and consequentially physically.  On the otherhand, there are those who have fallen victim to these drugs to the point of insanity.

Andy

I too suffered from migraines, but didn't use any psychedelics
when I had the worst of them, so it is by no means a permanent
cure.

I'm also bipolar and currently take a SSRI which also has
the good side-effect of killing my migraines, haven't had
one in a long time, now I don't recommend SSRI's for migraine
only, but as a last resort they might work.

A thing worth looking into is ergotamine it's similar
to LSD, lacks the hallucinogenic part while still retaining
the anti-migraine effects, it's worth considering as psychedelics
aren't really that feasible, both legally, time-wise and
psychologically as someone pointed out before.

Sorry that I don't have more insight, look into low-dose
psychedelics for migraines, they might work and it might
be a good compromise.

Good luck

You might want to fire off a private message to one of our moderators: Phred -- he is a strong advocate and as far as I know, has been using magic mushrooms to alleviate the symptoms of his cluster headache condition for quite some time.  Best of luck to you!

From age 13-17ish I suffered from really bad migraines about two to three times a month like clockwork.

I could always tell when they were about to happen. I would get an aura in the center of my vision that made it hard to focus on anything, and about half an hour after that the pain would start then usually last for about 5-6 hours then slowly go away.

After I started taking psychedelics when I was around 17 years old I noticed that I stopped getting migraines completely.

I know my case isn't(wasn't) nearly as bad as some people's, but I remember missing a ton of sports practices and school days because of them. They were completely debilitating and were really painful.

The longest I have gone without taking a psychedelic since I started was about 18 months. On the year and a half without taking anything I still didn't have one migraine, and if I did then it was so weak that it probably just felt like a bad headache(which I still get plenty of).

Hi Aria,

I’ve been researching mushrooms as a possible headache/migraine solution too. I’ve suffered from a non-stop headache for more than a year. It’s a constant dull ache that never goes away, and it flares up into a migraine-level intensity a few times each week. I’ve seen six different doctors and specialists, including neurologists who specialize in treating headaches, and I’ve had MRIs, CT scans, etc., but none of the doctors have found a way to get rid of the headache. They’ve prescribed every possible medication they can think of, but nothing even makes a dent in the pain. We’ve even looked for environmental causes, had our water tested for contaminants, looked at food allergies, etc., but all to no avail.

Last month, I came across an article about psilocybin being used to treat migraines and cluster headaches, and it prompted me to start researching everything I could find about the topic. In addition to the published research, I’ve come across a lot of anecdotal evidence – mostly reports from people who have used mushrooms to successfully treat migraines or to end a several-years-long cycle of cluster headaches. Many of those people reported going 6-8 months without experiencing another headache. Some of them reported going several years with no more headaches. (I know exactly what you mean about how that sounds like a dream. At this point, it would be so wonderful to get just one month without this headache, let alone three or six months or years!)

If you haven’t checked out the Cluster Busters site, definitely pay it a visit. It has a ton of great information about using psilocybin to treat headaches. It covers info about suggested dosages (which can vary quite a bit depending on a lot of different factors), initial doses versus maintenance doses, how to treat chronic versus episodic headaches, possible interactions with various prescription headache meds, etc.

I’m planning to try mushrooms soon to see if they'll help to alleviate my headache. If it works, I’ll definitely let you know. If you decide to try this remedy for your migraines, please let me know if it works for you.

I suffered from debilitating migraines from about 10-17 as well. I than began to use hallucinogenics recreationally for the experience of it. Since then, I haven't had a migraine since. I highly suggest reading into the substances before and determine if you are ready for such an experience. Tripping can be a mind-blowing, scary, and just amazing experience. You may realize more about yourself than you ever wanted to know.
