Sceletium tortuosum
    #14838810 -

I'm probably going to start propagating this from seed. I already have one plant from seed. It's still very small. When these get bigger, how big do they get and are they easy to propagate from cuttings like Aptenia is for example. Also, has anyone tried consuming the succulent after growing it. I've read some pretty interesting descriptions of preparation (mostly indigenous methods), but I'd be curious to hear how it went for you.

Seed is the best way at first. Once it gets bigger you'll be able to take cuttings and root them easily from what I hear. The consumption is usually done after fermentation to remove the oxalic acid, and home-grown would probably be amazing.

I just planted a boatload of Scelet and D.Bosseranum seeds so I could have a veritable Kanna/Mesebrine factory. It'll take a year or so for your little guy to get big enough to make lots of cuttings, just a warning.

Also, they'll fatten up quite substantially after 3-4 months of age. Thats when their growth rate increases.

After growing Cereus peruvianus from seed, I'm already impressed at the growth rate of this plant.

Thats the nice part, I'd venture that you only need 5-6 big healthy plants to keep yourself in good supply of Kanna powder

As a rule of thumb, I've heard that a medium sized stalk with 3 sets of leaves is an average dose once it's reduced and such.

Growing Sceletium from seed is very rewarding.  They look small for a while but then burst out with growth.  Also very easy to root via cuttings without rooting hormones.

Wow, I always assumed you'd need way more plant material than that! How do you prepare yours? Do you take the entire plant (roots and all) and macerate it until the internal plant juices begin to ooze out, then wrap it tightly in a special bag made from animal skins and place it in the hot western cape sun for a week, just like the Khoisan bushmen?

Well, it's best to use much more than 1 dosages worth, and to weigh the dried material after it, but a shaman I know always said he measured by sets of leaves when he was dosing.

I would mash up a combination of the roots/leaves and leave them in a ziplock to ferment for a week in the sun, then dry it, and finally powder it for the end product. I haven't done a big harvest yet since my oldest plants are like 4-5 Months. Only good for 5-10 doses and that'd hurt the poor guys.

I wish I could do the whole ritual, but I don't have any animal skins to use :craven:

I've yet to prepare anything from any of my plants but have read the same as Rourke mentioned.  You'd need a lot more than those little seedlings I posted up but they do grow quickly.  I have some I got as cuttings but they tend to be lankier, though part of that is probably how I treat them.  From cuttings they will grow quite fast.

Also - yes definitely permaculture

Wow! So these are fast then. I had one that was just a cotyledon, then I covered the seedflat back up with syran wrap to try to force germination on the 24 other seeds (no success) and within one month the seedling grew so much that it's on its third set of leaves. So, I suppose the syran wrap didn't have anything to do with it. These are just fast growing period.

DEFINITELY! And I'm actually pretty surprised someone on here is into it. Where'd you do your PDC? I did mine in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, but I'm a southern california boy. Mediterranean climate no-irrigation food-forestry is my specialty. Just got a gig next week turning a lawn into a drought tolerant food forest. Should be pretty fun!

Regarding the kannas, does anyone know how long until I can place one in full sun? I usually acclimate them first with shadecloth, but even with columnar cacti you can't do that too soon after the seedling stage.

Kanna, to the best of my knowledge arn't really Full-sun type guys. They're partial to half-shade most of the time, and tend to like moisture much more than most "Cacti".

Mine are growing quite quickly under a simple shoplight with cool and warm bulbs.

Very non-finnicky.

P.S. Also, they've been growing in 60% RH for their whole lives, and rarely do I let the soil dry out. I treat them like jungle plants and they keep coming back for more.

Haven't done any PDC - just garden/read/landscape etc a lot.  Can't really afford a course and the real lessons are from nature anyway

Oh, I was also planning to grow both succulents at the same time and in the same conditions to compare the growth! But unfortunately the S. tortuosum seeds of an online (European) vendor were out of stock. And I only found these seeds on American vendor sites, so I'd pay more on shipping costs.

I'm only growing D. bosseranum at the moment. They grow quite slow but maybe mine could use some more light. And they're only some months old now. I can take some pictures if anyone would be interested.

I'd love to see some of those! I hear it grows faster than Kanna once it's mature-ish, but that might not be the case. Mine are only on their first/second set of true leaves.

Sorry to hijack this topic with D. bosseranum pictures, but they have a lot in common with S. tortuosum. I planted these on the 13th of April:

The seeds were not very viable, some germinated only after a month or later, and most didn't germinate at all! So these are the bigger ones. Also the growth environment wasn't optimal: not a lot of sun and not enough air exchange since I put upside down jars over the pots and just recently took them off. I saw another growlog of D. bosseranum (one of the few) and his plants grew much faster so it seemed.

Btw: the ruler is in centimeter, just a remark so there won't be any misunderstandings.

I've grown both s. tortulosum and d. bosseranum, i'd say the delosperma is quite a bit faster growing (if given a lot of water), but even the sceletium was ready to take cuttings from by 6 months old. i re-potted into a 4" pot at about 4 months old and the extra root space really made it take off. Sceletium can grow in full sun (at least it can in the northeast), but it tends to skeletonize more leaves in full sun.

I should also repot them in the future since some grow very close to each other. But how do you re-pot them? The stems are so thin and fragile. Also, did you ever consume some D. bosseranum? I heard the effects are stronger than S. tortuosum! Did your D. bosseranum get this bonsai look? I suppose not since you planted it in a bigger pot. I'm going to try getting this bonsai-ish succulent.

Yes, i found repotting them made them grow way faster. The Kanna i had growing in a 6 pack, so i just had to pop out the whole root ball and put it into a larger pot. The delosperma i had growing in a community pot and i had crazy germination so they where really tight, i used a spoon as a mini shovel and just dug little clumps of seedling and put them in small pots. I have not consumed either of them. I have a bunch of d. bosseranum plants, some i barely ever water and are in a tiny pot they are starting to take on that neat bonzi look (and they flowered when only 1/2" tall and only 5-6 leaves), ones in a larger pot with more water look more viney. I'll try and post some photos.

I can't imagine these plants having a 'root ball' as the little stem that enters the soil looks so thin, hehe. And I read about these plants getting weedy when given too much water. Also, isn't it the intention to use the root of the D. bosseranum? So smaller pots and less water seem more appropriate to me. I would like to see some pictures of your plants!

It is likely that S. tortuosum would encounter most health problems in the summer if given regular water since these are from a mediterranean climate and have evolved for thousands of years in an area with a prolonged, dry, rainless summer.
