I.D. requests from my usual haunt
    #14825951 -

Decided to go out after some rain and found some cool stuff. These are all from a mixed hardwood forest with beech, oak, maple, sweetgum, tulip poplar, etc.

1. Are these the famous reishi I've been reading about? A few as you can see are just covered in what look like spores.

2. Not too sure about these little guys.

3. A bolete looking an awful lot like an orange peel.

4. A rather charming little blue-staining bolete.

Now for some rather fun/interesting ones:

5. Are these chanterelles? It's the first time I've found these so I'm rather unfamiliar. These are growing in several spots in my woods, and all on fallen logs which makes me think they're not chanterelles after all. The gills seem to be wrong as well. Sigh.

6. This one was hiding near fallen logs in a very marshy/muddy area. Looked like someone had stitched neat little off-white stitches around the margin of the cap. I was fascinated by this one. Looked almost unreal. Any ideas?

7. Sulphur shelf??? Found a few around. *NOTE* It was actually growing out of the log you see in the background.

8. This was a big mother... About nine inches tall and the cap was about five inches across. Visible from a mile away. Amanita sect. Lepidella? Very sexy 'shroom

And finally:

9. There were 3 or 4 of these scattered across my 3 mile trek. Awesome specimens. One of them (not pictured) was almost the size of my head! Don't know about an i.d. for this one.

Thanks as usual for your help!

I don't actually have a very good memory.  Couldn't tell you what I did yesterday.  I think the average rainbow family hippie could ID as well if they studied a bit.

That doesnt mean you do not have good knowledge.

Thank you Alan for those potential IDs. Number 6 is still the most intriguing for me, so I will go hopefully find more today and get a gill shot and spore print them.

I am lucky in that there is a natural area just down the road from me that has never been developed due to various circumstances. It is the most diverse spot within 30 minutes of me so far. In the Philadelphia suburbs   A looooot of mosquitoes though

Hmm, that would be cool if 5 was Gerronema strombodes. Apparently it's rare? I guess it needs a hot nasty summer like it's been the past few weeks here.

Here is a photo of the gills for #6:

6) Stropharia or Hypholoma, with some Bisporella citrina on the log to the right.

Yes they are cool.  They are also, for the most part, boring, broke and smelly.  They always ask for beer but never bring any.

The deep south a.k.a southeast Pennsylvania, haha.

I am liking Pholiota granulosa for 6. Thanks, The Thinker!

I research this shit 2-3 hours a day and still fuck up my id's

I blame it on my alcoholism though...

It's a set of skills developed over a period of years, man! Some of the TI's and regular contributors have been hunting for 5, 10, 15 years or longer.

Yeah, I've only been doing this for 2 years now

My knowledge will grow with time!

I would like to get into microscopy eventually, but until I am out of college I am broke as fuck

I wish I was going to college to learn Mycology, but there isn't much money in it cause there are very little jobs in this field

There is money in many other biological sciences though! Also, does your college have a biology/science department?

Hell, if you do the following method worked for me.

Just walking into a biology labroom which isn't occupied by a class and pull a microscope off of one of the shelves. You'll be good for up to 400X without a peep from anyone. After that, you'll have to ask a professor to allow you to have/use some immersion oil for the 100X objective.

If you're not a biology/science major, you can ask a professor of that field to help you. If they see a student with a genuine interest in biology, they'll usually do whatever is in their power to help.

EDIT: And get this book. It will be your best friend. :pm: me if you need a digital copy.

Thanks leponumos for the book reference(I added it to my favorites until I can get some cash together),

I am thinking about taking a biology class next semester because everyone has suggested that I go into this field. I am just going to a community college for a certificate, but I am sure that someone at the college is into this type of work.

I am officially excited for the school year!

Yea you can totally use the scopes at most universities.  No one is going to go up to you and be like "wtf are you doing with that microscope!?!?"

Another good trick is to find the people who are sequencing mushrooms and ask if they need any help in the lab.  They pretty much always do.  Its a lot of work.

A great book.  Nice that it got scanned.  I sent my copy to someone who worked in a document scanning center and he was able to scan it in and pass it off as work.
