Identification Request
    #1474174 - 04/19/03 09:42 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hey everyone, this is my first find of this Spring. Here in Colorado we've had temperatures around 60 and rain showers off and on for the past 2 days. I found these at the base of a pine tree. The gills are an off white on some and a light purple on others. I'm taking a spore print as I type so I'll post that pretty soon. I know these arent hallucinogenic but I'd like to get an ID anyways. Thanks.

Beware: Open the above links and be prepared for 3-4 pop-up windows.

Interesting specimens.

At first glance it looks like an Agaricus. Interesting photos. Not bad, but a bit yellow so I can't really tell what color anything is.

In addition to the spore print we'll need to know what (if any) color it bruises. You've cut it in half, now scrape the inside with the edge of your knife (not gently). It can take up to an hour for any color changes to occur.

The other thing we'll need to know is the odor. Smell it around the base of the stem and near where the stem and cap join. If you can't detect any smell, try crushing the base of the stem with your fingers and smelling a bit more. If you don't smell anything, let us know that, too.

I'm in Colorado also. You should know that Agaricus is a fairly difficult genus to identify mushrooms to species in. Many of them a good edibles, but several are poisonous, too.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the replies.  The mushrooms aren't bruising any color and no spores have dropped yet.  They smell very similar to the white mushrooms you'd buy at the Supermarket, kind of like crayons.

Pretty good picking day for Colorado

My first thought is Agaricus subrufescens, but the stem in the photos looks smooth. That species usually has a fairly scaly looking stalk.

Based on the photos, there appears to be almost no ring left on the stem. Is that accurate?

Also, keep in mind that, for Agaricus, you will need to bruise the mushroom to get a good color change on many of them. Lots of other mushrooms will change color on exposure to air, but these require some abuse. Also, often the change takes many minutes to become obvious.

Let us know.

Happy mushrooming!

The spore print came out to be dark brown. Now they are bruising to an off white color with a little bit of brown. There is still a minor ring on the stem.

The slight bruising would make me suspect that you've found Agaricus bisporus, the same species as in the stores. The regular white button mushroom, crimini, and portabello are all the same species. That should give some idea of the variability in appearance.

Happy mushrooming!
