How tall does my friends terrarium have to be for fruiting cakes? Does anyone have a record for vertical limit? How fast does creeper colonize? Is the smell of brown rot distinctive enough for one to know that it is really there?

Depends upon the size of cakes your fruiting, and the quantity.
Does anyone have a record for vertical limit? Record as in? The biggest a mushroom had grown vertically?
How fast does creeper colonize?
My dog had good results, depends on your incubator.
Is the smell of brown rot distinctive enough for one to know that it is really there?
Yes, when you smell your first fully colonized cake you will then be able to detect a contam. Then again it's really best not to detect contams by smelling. You may get sick.

How tall does my friends terrarium have to be for fruiting cakes?
for good results, at give the cakes at least 6 inches of head room. keep in mind that your friend will have to fan a smaller terrarium more frequently.
Does anyone have a record for vertical limit?
i'm not sure what you mean by that.
How fast does creeper colonize?
a PF cake will colonize in anywhere from 3 to 5 weeks. a grain jar will colonize in one to two weeks. the make-up of the substrate and the incubation conditions are more important than strain in colonization speed.
Is the smell of brown rot distinctive enough for one to know that it is really there?
i've never heard of this. do you mean bacillus bacteria (wet spot, sour rot)? yes, you will be able to smell it if you have it. it smells like sickly-sweet-sour-funk.

It's dangerous to 'sniff' for contams.. Make the o'lady do it.
