humidifying 65 gal aquarium

Hi, I was wondering if it would be a good idea (and if possible) to grow lots of cakes in my large aquarium. It measures approx. 1 foot by 3 foot, and is about 1.5 foot high. I was hoping to put an aquarium air pump in there to humidify it. would I get enough humidity in there?

I can't say for sure whether the pump would be enough or not, but I can honestly tell u a vick's coolmist will do the trick. If it gets too humid, put it on a timer. My friend runs his on a 3 off 1 on cycle. Works great!!! Good luck!!!

You might want to consider using a coolmist humidifier. Of course you'll have to have a good fitting lid, but I assume you've already thought of this. Also you'll want to cut 2 holes in the lid, one for humidifier input and one for exhaust which you'll cover with some sort of filter (filter disc, poly fill, dust mask). A good tek for this can be found at
http://www.shroomery.org/findorgrowthem.php?View=docs&doc=102
or you can go to http://www.fanaticus.com/humid.htm for another technique. Using a coolmist offers that added advantage of good gas exchange which will help with growth and help keep contams down.
Good luck, sounds like you could get a great setup going there

I have a monsterous 90 gallon tank that Im thinking about casing. My problem is the same as yours, in that i'm not sure how to create enough humidity. Is it possible that I could just use lots of damp perlite to create enough humidity in this massive tank? I also have a vicks coolmist humidifier...better? i can't imagine the yields I could get with that thing, but I think its worth a try.

You don't want your exhaust hole in the lid. CO2 is
heavier than air (mostly nitrogen and oxygen) and
wiil fall to the bottom. So you want your exhaust hole
down low to drain the CO2 out. Hope that helps.

Damn I just remembered it's an aquarium. I'd flip it
upside down. There's a tek called "Cowboy's Kickass
Fruiting Method" using an aquarium that's been turned
upside down. I'll see if I can ind a link.

I have bottom vent holes in both my aquariums. Just by a glass drill bit and be carefull. IT MUST BE A SPECIAL DRILL BIT MADE FOR GLASS. (just thought I'd stress that)

One more thing, I have perlite and a bubbler going 24/7 in my 10 gal and I still have to mist occasionally. I would guess you need some type of humidifier.

chemical smile- thats your problem(from other post) if you are running with perlite-and bubbler and still have to mist, something is wrong-use more perlite! put 2-3 inchs in and add about 1 inch of standing water in your terrarium-that will fix your problem i bet

and those holes might be overkill-LOL-why you need vent holes in a 10 gallon terrarium-all my terrariums are 28 gallon-do i need vent holes?

This intregues me, I am a busy student that doesnt always have the time at home needed to raise a healthy family (of fungus). I have 2 10 gal aquariums and each on has 2 smaller than a dime holes coverd with filterdisks, one on each short side and mounted low. I then have drilled quick disconnects into the glass near the top 1 above each vent hole. I plug a high output air pump line into each tank , (2 lines split 4 ways for 4 quick disconects ). In theory I have constant gas exchange and a pressure from abouve forcing bad air out the bottom vents. I have a peroxide bubbler spliced into each of the 2 main air lines for a little extra humidity. I will show pics tonight and hopefully someone can tell me what I am doing wrong. All air is coming through a filtered box into the pump for cleanlyness. My intention here is to not have to do a damn thing until they fruit . I think however that I need to find a larger tray for the perlite. I put it in trays because it is far too time consuming to clean out when you just put it on the floor. OH well pics will come tonight.

hey thanks everyone for all your help. from the responces I got I think I will go with something more managable, like a smaller aquarium. I got the impression that I should have some sort of humidifier for that size of space, and since I don't have the funding right now I better just forget about it for a while. I will try and find a regular sized aquarium and just use the wet perlite. It's cheap and easy enough.
Once again thanks for the posts and happy growing

Large aquariums are fine....you just have to set them up right.
