another poo question.
    #1473540 -

ok, so i've hade several successes with birdseed casings, and i want to move on to poo.
i have a few questions though, and i couldn't find the answers by searching.
1. Does the poo have to dry out completely before it can be used?
I mean can i just take fresh poo, leach it, pasteurize it, and spawn it?
I've read somewhere on here that the poo needs to dry first to allow
Beneficial microbes to grow, but i don't understand why this is.
2. Is leeching necessary always?

I mean can i just take fresh poo, leach it, pasteurize it, and spawn it? Yes but if it is too wet it will slow down production.

2. Is leeching necessary always? -Depends on the source but it is good practice to always do.

well, my main question is whether or not the initial drying stage is
necessary. from your link i found:
" some have dried in the sun/air and some have dried in a box with a fan.
some have even put it in the oven and baked the shit out of it...but this stinks to
high heaven from what they said. it is a good idea to break the poo up as it dries
which makes screening it far easier. You would want to break it up into small pieces
at least the size of a golf ball...when you are drying it out. Then break a few open
every now and then to check to see what the moisture level inside the poo is like.
You want it completely dried out."
this is the step that i want to skip---if possible.
i have some fresh horse poo, and i want to pastuerize it today, (roomates gone for
the weekend and if i have to make a big stink in the apt i would like to do it while
there away) so has anyone had success w/o drying the shit?

give it a shot, mang.

it all depends on the horse shit, what they
were fed, and the environment.

some people can use it fresh out of the
horses ass, and then there are folks like
afoaf of afoaf who has to let it dry or
use aged stuff.

the fresher it is, the more likely that it's
going to colonize slow, or worse, stall out.

if you are worried that what you have is
too fresh, I'd consider soaking it in cold
water for 20, draining, soaking for another
20, draining and THEN pasteurizing.

the soaking, draining, soaking, draining
would constitute the leaching part.

you want to drain out as much of the
urea as possible as this is what generally
leads to slowed, stalled, or worse, contaminated
casings.

it also helps, if you can, to 'cut' some of your
fresh poop with a little straw.

just some suggestions, but again, things
are never exact, sometimes you just have to
give it a go and see how it works.

plus, tell your roomates to shut the fuck up,
I'm sure they get some free mushrooms out
of the deal, so I'm sure they can deal with
the *earthy* aroma of pasteurizing horse
shit...
