No.
And tbh, those don't sound like muscular problems, more like joint/connective tissue/inflammation problems.
Not to say that increasing your protein intake won't help them at all, but increasing your Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) intake will probably help more.
I recommend fish oil, 3g a day, to start with, see how it goes.

Getting your essential fatty acids is very important, many people lack omega 3s; Champion is definitely correct in recommending fish oil, definitely a great supplement.

Yeah pills are the way to go. Good pills wont even smell or taste if they;re cracked or leaking or whatever.

EDIT: Oops, mixed up 2 threads and posted a response for both in one thread...

If you get cheaper pills and find your getting the "fish burps" then go ahead and put them in the fridge or freezer, that should stop them from dealing to early an causing that issue.

Make sure you get fish oil, not cod liver oil, they're not the same thing.
also, stick at it, don't expect rapid results. if your o3 levels are badly depleted it can take weeks to get them back up to par.

> As a vegetarian you should be getting about 30mg of zinc a day.

That is twice the recommended daily allowance and nearly 15% above the dangerous level.  Too much zinc leads to copper deficiency and anemia.  There are other sources of zinc than pumpkin seeds.  100g of toasted wheat germ has more than the RDA of zinc.  Sesame seeds (and tahini), dark chocolate, peanut butter, baked beans, chickpeas, almonds, cashews, kidney beans, and peas are all excellent sources of zinc.

For vegetarians with a high phytate intake due to consuming larger amounts of whole grains and especially legumes has been proven to inhibit the absorption of zinc. Doctors have recommended for vegetarians to get 50% more zinc than the FDA recommended daily intake of 15mg. I also recommended 30mg of zinc for people who are active and lift weights. This was before I knew he didn't exercise. Studies are linked to zinc loss through sweating.

Personally, as a vegan, the only two things I would consider supplementing are vitamin B12, which is only found naturally occurring in meat (possibly in some veggies too, but in such a way that the bioavailability and subsequent absorption is much lower), and omega-3 from fish oils, which is supposedly better than omega-3 from flax and other nuts.  However I have done nothing to supplement those and have no problem with it.

sorry to get a bit off topic but some things you should probably be aware of. vitamin B12 is produced by bacteria and no veggies contain the biologically active isomer responsible for its vitamin activity. the only naturally occuring dietary source is animal products. it has been found in bacteria on the surface of unwashed cultivated Agaricus mushrooms but they are not a good source. the body doesn't need much of it and unlike most of the water soluble vitamins it is stored in the liver however without consuming it you will develope deficiency and over time (few years) develope adverse effects. all vegans need to consume B12 supplemented foods or take a vitamin tablet.

Out of curiosity, if I ate fish once a week would it remove the need for a fish oil supplement?

Same question for meat and zinc. . .

Thanks

I would imagine that will not be enough fish to keep you up to par in your omega 3s. Maybe if you were eating it 2-3 times a week. Not 100% sure about the zinc I'll leave that one up to someone else.

I would say your soreness has more to do with your in-activeness.  Your diet sounds pretty healthy. Are you sitting down most of the day?  That will fuck
up anyone's back.  I've recently started more physical work and have the same problems as you - sore hands / wrists.  Because I haven't used those
muscles in ages, they were very weak and inflexible.  Doing exercise has helped them loosen up and become less sore.

Humans have only recently not needed to do physical work (more than most people do now) to survive - bit over 100 years.  As annoying as it might be,
the body needs to do exercise - and thrives on it.

I've been a vegetarian for bout 4 years, like yourself I'm pretty skinny.  I eat the same sort of things you do, as long as you get a bit of variety,
nuts legumes etc.  I'm usually fine.  However with exercise I find it beneficial to take a protein supplement or eat eggs etc.

Anyway I would probably recommend doing all round core exercises, and possibly some hand / wrist exercises as well.  Yoga is good, Eating eggs
couldn't hurt either.

Yes I've worked in an office for almost three years.

Back pain, which is getting a lot better with physio and posture correction, was actually caused through exercising with free weights, but badly.

The knee pain came from a combination of regular running and a flat foot. I've done a lot of work to strengthen quad and have finally got to the point where I can actually do low impact exercise (cycling!). Hopefully it will completely go away over the next 6 months.

Do you have any recommendations for wrist exercises? Just saw the doctor again two days ago - I've been put back on anti-inflammatories and have been referred to - yet another - physio, but the referral will take a while.

Ahh I see.  Huh wouldn't have thought you could injure your back through weights.  Hmm.  I just do sit ups supermans planks, and those things where
you lie in a crusafix and put your legs across yourself from side to side.  That works for me pretty well my back always cracks when I do the side to side
leg things.

My wrists weren't a problem till I had to use them recently for work.  My forearms / hands were killing me after doing repetetive squeezing - other stuff
using my muscles all day.  Anti inflamatories are ok.  What I found works well is getting an ice pack, putting it on the sore muscles, then using a heat pack
and alternating a few times.  This expands and contracts your veins and capilaries, working a bit like a pump bringing new blood in and out.  Reparing
your muscles quicker.

I went to the doctor for the pain - he just said to ice it and do exercises.  I had tendonitis which could be what you have.  Thats pretty much solved by
Strengthening the affected muscles.

Push ups wights will strengthen ur forearms / hands.

These ones look pretty good, need to ge myself a broom handle and a squeeze grip thing.

Do you have a regular yoga practice?  Yoga completely removes my chronic pain from a bike accident.

I would like to actually but with drumming, exercising, reading, cooking, physio exercises and a girlfriend I just just don't have the time.

However, if I am forced to take a break from drumming then I would probably look into it. You're not the first to have recommended it to me and I've done a lot of pranayama and meditation in the past.

if it was oily fish, eg salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, then yes that could work...
if your only source of fish oil was oily fish then a decent sized portion of oily fish, say 150g, 4 times a week would be good.
600g once a week is a lot of fish though, and absorption might not be optimum if you ate it all in one go.
fish oil capsules aren't offensive in any way, unless you don't like fish, in which case, too bad.:smirk:

I've been a vegetarian for 9 years, and have no pain or anything. I'm not sure what is causing it, but if it is indeed lack of protein eat more.

Hi

I've been predominantly vegetarian (i.e., eating meat but rarely, maybe once a month) for almost three years.

In the past 4 years I seem to have developed: (i) severe back pain which I have been successfully doing physio to manage, (ii) severe knee pain which I have been less successfully been doing physio to manage, and (iii) what I'm hoping is temporary RSI in both wrists/hands.

Can a (probably) relatively low protein diet mean a susceptibility to muscular problems such as these? I do try to supplement my diet with beans, lentils, cheese, nuts and seeds but perhaps that's not enough?

If it helps in your analysis please bare in mind that I am m/24/5.6'/60kg.

Thanks

I posted this response in reply to another thread but I think it might be usefull here.

Muscles are made up of 70% water, 22% protein, and 8% fat.

The follow protein calculations are only valid if you are taking in complete proteins (steaks, chicken, fish, pork, eggs) which have amino acid patterns that you need. Incomplete proteins come from grains, beans, and vegetables (vegan diet). If you are a vegan you should consume a variety of plant foods or complementary proteins. Such as beans and rice, corn and beans, corn tortillas and refried beans, or peanut butter and bread. A general rule of thumb is that combining beans or legumes with grains provides the important amino acids.

Normal protein intake for an adult should be 0.8g/kg of body weight(0.36g/pound)

A safe protein intake for an adult athlete should be 1.5-2.0g/kg of body weight(0.67-0.9g/pound)

Keep in mind that healthy fats and carbohydrates are just as important as protein. Why are they important? Because protein can be metabolized as a source of energy in a state of negative calorie balance. That is when fewer calories are consumed than are used up. When this happens, protein can not be used for your intended purpose of replacing the amino acid pool or in other words gaining muscle.
