noob with perlite/misting question
    #1456765 - 04/14/03 12:14 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

A friend of mine read somewhere that you should remove some of the excess water from your fruiting chamber to reduce getting contaminants. My friend has a 10 gal aquarium for a fruiting chamber with approximately 1" of perlite at the bottom and 1/2" of water/peroxide solution. He is also misting with a water/peroxide solution. Since he's not adding water except when misting, should he be worried about contaminants from the standing water? Or can he wait until his first flush is done and change the water and perlite? Or should he wait longer? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Change between flushes if your growing area is susceptible to contams...If you have a HEPA or at least a semi-sterile environment, it shouldn't be too much of a worry if ur using H2O2.

Perlite is a low contam risk, unless you are spilling food and shit all over it. My friend only changes his when he cleans the fruiting chamber. You'll get better humidification if you use a little less water in your perlite.

If you are fruiting cakes then there is no need to mist. Perlite provides plenty of humidification in a sealed fruiting chamber.

There should be no standing water with perlite. If you see pools of water, you have WAY too much water in there and you should either take some out, or put in another layer of Perlite.

If you are misting, there should be no reason to ever add water to the perlite. The extra water from the light misting should keep your water levels ok. But like Dog said, you don't really NEED to mist with perlite if your enviroment is closed.

Thanks for all the information. I'll tell my friend to remove a little of the water and stop misting as much and I'll let you know how the flushes turn out.
