Advice for an injured shoulder (surgery or not)
    #14521118 -

Hey guys,

About a year ago I hurt my shoulder doing a drunk backflip (yes, I can do them sober no problem, but I was retarded and tried to do it drunk).  I partially tore the labrum, and possibly damaged the bicep tendon.

I did physio/exercises with a theraband from July to September last year, then basically stopped doing the exercises.  I saw a surgeon, and I'm considering going in for shoulder stability surgery.

I'm starting to swim today, and have gone back to aggressively doing the exercises trying to get the strength up to compensate for the damage, however I'm not convinced it's going to get better without surgery.

Has anyone here done similar damage to their shoulder that can tell me their story, ie did you have surgery, did you do the exercises, is it better now?

Thanks guys!

I had a severe dislocation of my shoulder. I had an amazing doctor that wanted to do the surgery, but my mom talked me out of it. That was 17 years age. I wish I wouldve done the surgery. I've redislocated it twice since. It gets easier every time.

yo man I just had surgery last week to repair a torn labrum in my right shoulder.

I tried the physical therapy before doing surgery, and I was really aggressive with it...but it didn't feel like my shoulder was getting any stronger so I went in for surgery.

It's a pretty tough recover (6 weeks in a sling/3 months before going back to work) but it IS worth it IMO.

If you want you shoulder to be healthy and strong again, you should get the surgery. I could have lived with my shoulder the way it was...but I'd rather be able to enjoy doing the things I love again, like playing sports.

Currently I'm doing the physical therapy, but it's really simple right now. I take the arm outta the sling 4 times a day and do small pendulum motions, very short range of motion lifts, and it's a real pain in the ass. The shoulder is sore, I'm outta percocet...and the sling fucking KILLS my back & neck.
The sling I have has a strap going around my back so I really can't move the arm at all when it's in the sling.

I would say, if you want your arm to be strong again, go for the surgery, but be prepared for a tough recovery. My physical therapist said 1 year from the surgery date before playing sports (i.e throwing a baseball)
