English Morel (pics)
    #1451822 - 04/12/03 04:22 AM (21 years, 10 days ago)

No more a morel virgin lol. These were found in a bark mulched rose bed.
The bed has been there for 1 year and was previously a ruff grass area.
And there are many more smaller ones just pinning and coming up.

They have a totaly hollow stem which i didnt know about. So cloning maybe a
little hard to achive, though i havent opend one up yet :-) as im going to eat these.
And get a couple for cloning whan is gets damper here.

Anyone know what speicies these could be?

Species can be difficult with the morels. We need to see the relative color of the ridges and pits in mature specimens. In those photos (nice photos, by the way) they're fairly dark, which suggests that these are Morchella elata.

Of course, to confuse things more, Dr. Weber is working with some molecular biologists and will soon rework all the species. So whatever we call it now is probably not what it will be called when she is finished.

Regardless of species, all morels are edible. Make sure you cook them thoroughly (they are poisonous if not cooked enough). Also, make sure you cut them in half vertically and remove any insects or slugs that may have crawled up inside. Unless you really want to eat them, too.

Nice find.

Happy mushrooming!

Wow. I envy you! I just went on my regular burn sites that I'm monitoring and found nothing.
I hope you'll try to clone them and take prints!!!

Excellent Paid!!

Congrats  .

Those look like the ones I found here in Seattle the other day, also growing out of mulch.  They don't look like the ones I pick in E. Washington, I'm not sure what species they could be.  They remind me of M. elata, but lighter in color, like an elata x esculenta cross or something, heh, weird stuff.  Enjoy em  .

and quite possibly i got a culture from that print?

Cool well ill try that method thanks Mister Mushroom, and i can tell you all
that they live up to there reputation of tasting pretty dam good :-)

I just cut them in half(no slugs but thanks for the heads up Toxicman :-)
then fryed them in sweetpepper oil with a dash of balsamic vinegar and a little
black pepper, fryed well and consumed :-) Very tasty :-) and quite a unique
taste, milder than i expected but of a good texture.

So get out looking if you havent eaten fresh wild picked morels :-) i guarantee you wont be disappionted if you find any.

You rang? Sorry to get off topic, but I noticed your quote from Emerson. I'm pretty interested in transcendentalism. Anyway, those mushrooms look nice even though I've never eaten any before like that.

I don't know and no. This rating seems to be bringing about more bad than good. It really doesn't matter to me. You're the second person to bring it up.
