here is my $0.02:

brown rice powder is suspose to be better fresh, and organic is better because it has no persertivtes. Dont use tap whater, get distilled water from your grocery store or boil some water to sterlize it (let it cool down too)

I'm a newbie too. But I have successful growth in all my jars and two of them are 100% colonized after a little over two weeks now. But I bought some Mahatma brown rice (in a bag from W.D.)and grinded it up with a coffee grinder from service merchandice. I burned up the one I had before because I kept grinding load after load after load until the coffee grinder over heated. But for water for substrate I used water PF suggest using; Natural, like lake or river on pond water with some minerals in there. I just used Dasani bottle water cause it says on the side "with natural minerals". thats all,
