Are you a hot chick?  If you answered yes then you shouldn't travel alone..  Sorry.  Check out some back packers forums, you might find someone nearby who's going the same time you are..

fuck that.  "shouldn't" is so subjective.  it's entirely dependent on whether you're of a risk-averse nature or not.  if you're one to play it safe, never step outside of your comfort zone, never willing to take a risk for the sake of living life, then no you "shouldn't".

but in all seriousness, amsterdam is not a dangerous place.  hell, the majority of western europe is rather safe.  i wouldn't recommend a female do too much solo hitching or anything, but a single female can totally have a rather safe and fulfilling experience traveling alone.

so far as the OP goes, none of us know you well enough to tell you if it would be stupid for you to travel alone in amsterdam.  i can tell you that it's ridiculously user-friendly from a tourist point of view.  you won't even really have to step out of your comfort zone as you will be constantly surrounded by similarly young, naive, and ready-to-party travelers--assuming you do the hostel thing.  there will be guides every step of the way, if you so desire it.  the main thing you'd have to worry about is your wallet.  and i'm not even talking about pickpockets.  it's just too damn easy to spend money.

tl;dr amsterdam is a city made for tourists.  don't be a pussy.

I've looked into it extensively myself and I founf out the cheapest (and possibly funnest) route is to take air-lingus to Ireland (~350$ both ways) and to hitch-hike to England. From there you can either take a train for 100$ or hitch-hike your way to Holland.

That is hillarious - Hitchhicking from Ireland to England then accross England then across either the English Channel or the North Sea crossing, you could pay to cross these are either crossed by ferry boat of the channel tunnel, this is not something you could hitch - never mind ignoring the thought of getting through the backwaters of middle England hahahaha there are no go areas all over the place depending on your race and skin colour all accross this area of Britain, not to mention all the hick crazy country folk who dont like folk who are doing whatever you are doing when they found you - not to mention any time your in the cities and your at the mercy of the chav gangs of youth and thuggery would would stab you for your sneakers and whatever is in your bag hahaha England is a very rough place especially in the low income areas, here we don't have many guns so the violence is always up close and very personal, I am 243lb and 1m82cm and i have been knifed twice and i live in a half decent area

Lol its not that bad!

I've hitch hiked all around southern england before and never had any troubles.  I've even walked though the really dodgy areas of inner city and been fine.  TBH you should stay away from dodgy city areas, the country side is fine though you don't get any problems... english country folk are just normal people they are unlikely to bother you unless you bother them.  You can hike across farmland and sleep in woods and barely see a soul if you plan it right.

Thats pretty bad that you have been knifed twice!  What happened?  A guy I know got stabbed but it was only because he kept going out brawling every weekend which is kinda asking for it.  I got held up at knife point once but I just gave them my wallet and they left.  It only had £3 in it so I wasn't bothered about the loss.

hmm, perhaps england is worse than I thought. In my youth (ok, like last year) I'd hitch-hike from Sudbury, to barrie to Toronto and back. I even hitched  rides from Orangeville all the way across the border to Cleveland. (9hr non stop trip. Took me 26hrs. About 7 of those hours were trying to find someone willing to lemme cross the border with them.

So a trip is possible, and even quite feasible. And I've never been stabbed, or robbed, or raped. (moderately attractive girl). Always carry a 8'' serrated knife though, just in case.

And I thought there was a Bridge across England and Ireland.....

Dude, yeah, you'll most likely be alright. I mean, it's not like you're thinking of going into Beirut and opening a bagel stand all by your lonesome...

One of the stabbings was over £5 in my wallet and male pride - i did not like the idea of giving my wallet to this little shithead with a knife, so instead of giving him my wallet with only £5 in i went for the knife hand, he stuck me in the gut before i could grab his wrist pull him close and headbut him to the floor before realising how well he had got me, knife went through my liver and spleen 5 inches (15cm) into my body, i ended up having a 4 hr laporascopic operation to save my life. Doctors left a 16cm scar from my navel up to my chest haha scar looks like a sword with my belly button and the hair leading down from it looking like the hilt

Not worth risking your life for pride.  Not for me anyway.  I can take an ego bruise a lot easier than a knife wound.

Did the guy get caught and go to jail?

Yeah i also got £5000 in compensation from the criminal injuries compensation board, it was great cos i got it 18 months later but it was still shit as fuck because if we were standing in a hospital with the finest doctor on hand and you said let me stab you in the gut for 500'000 i'd tell you to fuck off politely

reason for edit

I agree with you about pride completely but back then i was 20 and I had not tamed the beast of pride as I had a lot of it convinced i was an alpha creature of our species

thanks for all the feedback everyone, i agree that its all about what i make it. If im not one of those people who live in a box constantly worrying about what might happens and the dangers that lurk around every corner. If i was i wouldnt have even asked this question.

I have the common sense and street smarts to a degree to know when i should be aware of my surrounding and then when i can be care free.

I just simply dont want to miss out on the chance just because my friends cant go. I Just know nothing about Holland which is why i asked.

holland is pretty awesome.  definitely worth the visit.  the cities other than amsterdam are worth a visit too.  i suggest looking into couchsurfing.org

it's extremely unlikely that you'll find a couch in amsterdam in the summer months, given that it will no doubt be in huge demand.  however, it's much more likely you'll find a couch in utrecht or rotterdam.  both cities have a decently active couchsurfing scene and won't have nearly as much demand as amsterdam couches.

You will be sound, only street to avoid in Amsterdam is the very top end of the Shopping street kalverstraat where it changes name to Nieuwendijk as this turns the corner it is a prime mugging zone, it is locally known and you will see lots of signs warning you about zakenrollers (spelling might be wrong there but it is pickpockets). This area is alright in daytime but becomes abandoned once it is after 1am and if you accidentally find yourself here this is bad, I once was down this way in a coffeeshop after visiting the Amsterdam branch of Midtown Records for some serious gabba shopping and as i was travelling back through this street to my hotel it was about 2am and I noticed i was being marked as a possible target and three lads were debating whether they could take me, they were on opposite sides if the narrow street i was walking through ansd they were coordinated without speaking, as i realised they were plotting and readied myself to possibly defend myself until i could run they realised that i realised they were plotting and i guess this changed their minds about whether or not i was gonna be an easy roll and they waitied for the next fish
