Would it be stupid to travel to Amsterdam alone?

I really would like to go this summer, but the ticket prices are insane. I think im the only person out of my group of friends who could afford it. Is this a good or bad idea?

My best friend since kindergarden are going to Europe in July. Flying into Dublin and spending some time there in Ireland then going to Amsterdam. I'll only be there for three weeks but my friend has considerably more cash than I and will be trekking around Europe for several months alone after I head home.

Good idea.

Its a fairly safe place, theres a lot of police about.  If you go on your own you can do whatever you want without other people expecting you to entertain them or do things you may not want to do.

If you do want to party with a group everyone is there to party so you can just walk up to anybody and chat.

Theres a really cheap campsite in zeeburg near amsterdam.  The hotels in the center are REALLY expensive.  I suggest camping or they have little wooden houses you can hire.

Theres a tram right next that runs all night that will take you to the center :thumbup:  Thats the cheapest way to do it.

Also go to the Bulldog.  They let you smoke and drink in the same room (most places don't allow this) and have loads of good entertainments ;-)

And, take your own supply of food because the shops are really expensive.

I spent a week in Rotterdam last February got drunk and got lost in the city had zero problems very open a kind people they speak english, dutch and french so no problems being understood but still a better idea to have travel buddies.

Yeah rotterdam is really quiet compared to Amsterdam its a nice place.  Amsterdam is a proper headfuck if you are like me and get a bit sketched out when your really stoned cuz its so crowded and theres always someone asking you for something.

i was told that haarlem is also a good place, ill probally stay there and then travel to Amsterdam.

Yeah really enjoyed Rotterdam I highly recommend it to anyone who want a quieter Amsterdam. I was staying about one kilometre from the Erasmus Bridge.
I was there at the end of March very mild and sunny and NO SNOW !!!

Besides its amsterdam, they can buy a pussy for a dollar.  :smile:  I thought it was a pretty safe place.  Friendly, loads of police about.  The cities here are worse.

Nobody should hide away forever not travel anywhere just in case some thing happens.  :confused:

Didn't she ask if she should travel alone?  Maybe I misunderstood, because I never said anything about never going anywhere, just don't go alone..

Personally, I like Haarlem a lot better than Amsterdam. It has a really nice city center with typical Dutch houses, and it's a lot less crowded than Amsterdam. The people tend to be a little less aggressive than in Amsterdam, and they're not as sick of the hordes of stoned tourists staggering around. And if you ask me, there's absolutely no reason at all to visit Rotterdam if you're a tourist. It's about the ugliest city imaginable, and the people are definitely not friendlier than in the other 'big' cities.

About traveling alone: I don't see any particular problems there. Of course, every big city has bad neighborhoods, but you're unlikely to see much of them as a tourist.

I went last year with a few mates and was surprised by how safe it was, i was planning on going alone this year until some friends decided they wanted in.

I think it'd be amazing to go alone, i for one could get way more done

Being worried about safety traveling from wherever you are to Amsterdam is pretty much a non-issue IMO.

Can something happen?  Sure.  People exist, and even if they didn't, nature exists.

The chances are extremely low however.


You could walk through Detroit buck naked as a woman and your chances of being raped aren't as high as you might think they are.  They are high enough however that it isn't the most prudent thing to go around doing.

Traveling to Somalia or Sudan; relatively dangerous.

Traveling to Amsterdam, relatively safe.

I don't think OP declared their sex.  I'm going traveling alone :shrug: If I only went out in a group I'd never do anything. 

Besides I'm not worried about being killed, attacked, robbed or anything like that.  Its all a matter of perspective.  I feel sorry for people that exist in states like that.  Its just life.  For all I know an asteroid might land on my head tomorrow but I'm not gonna stay inside forever.

I go to all parts of Holland regularly by myself it is my launch pad to get to any rave in europe, Amsterdam is 1 hr flight from me it is no different to any other hardcore city in the world, you get caught knapping some fucker will roll you if your in the wrong area of town, i never get any bother but that might be because i am 1m82cm and 243lbs with a skin-head to the scalp.

Rotterdam is cool but people are not so happy to speak English especially if you just walk in and start speaking English expecting English back. Most can speak English, this is similar to most of the non tourists areas of The Nederlandse, in tourist areas everyone automatically speaks English, for this reason i learnt my first Dutch phrase "Sprekt ew Engels?" it breaks the ice nicely and separates you mentally from the people they hate who they currently thought you were.
