My former roomate and best friend is currently the highest Pecae Corps member in teh world.... in altitude - hahaha. he's in a mountaintop village in Peru.
The signup process is rediculous! HE had to go through years of interviews/contacts/intro sessions/etc. Once he was finally told he was allowed in the corps, he wasn't going to know where he was going until shortly before his departure. He was hoping he wouldn't have to go to africa. Luckily enough (since he speaks spanish, probably) he got to go to south america.
i think he is very happy with what he's doing. THey pretty much just send you there and let you decide what the community needs ---- then you work towards it. He's doing tree conservation I think. Has his own office and a computer - alhtough apparently thats quite uncommon for corps volunteers.
Definitely proud of him. Hope you're having fun, roomie!

I can vouch for it being a way complicated process.
I looked into doing it when I first got out of school and quickly realized I was just not going to put the amount of effort into applying and interviewing that they would like.
Still something I would've liked to do, they just make it hard. It's probably understandable why, so I'm not knocking them.

I saw a show on TV the other day profiling women in the Peace Corps who have been raped and essentially given the middle finger by the Peace Corps in response.

The FAQ says a degree isn't required, but it's probably competitive enough so that you pretty much need one. Either that or useful work experience.
It says you get 7k for 27 months of work.
