i don't know, to me, the two most popular counterculture figures that watts undoubtedly influenced are mckenna and wilson. mckenna mostly talks about psychedelics and all his theories surrounding them, and wilson mostly talks about semantics, quantum physics with a little bit of philosophy and literature. watts tends to dwell more on religion and its scholarly aspects than anything else. in fact i can't really recall him lecturing in depth on psychedelics at all.

only then shall we live in a perfect world.

The only thing you said that I had issue with was calling Watts a neo hippie. That's not your opinion it's an incorrect statement.

i don't see anyone making ad hominem attacks. i guess telling us to "form our own opinions" is sort of one, but i'm not insulted because i'm quite secure in my opinions.

I wasn't really referring to you guys with that,

I'm just annoyed by the "generation" of people that were raised listening to these "philosophers"... never forming their own opinions, just spouting out shit they heard in a book or on a tape.

I think the most important quote from the 60's era was "Think for Yourself, Question Authority" by Leary, but a lot of people failed to grasp the concept and just hid behind the slick catch phrase, if I'm making any sense.

TLDR : I hate hippies.

Socrates was a neo hippie (you can't dispute it because it's my opinion, bro).

"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

Check out his (unofficial?) album Summer Of Love.  That's the only audio release of his that I know of in which he talks about psychedelics explicitly.  I'm pretty sure it's from, appropriately enough, 1967.

A good way to brush your intellectual teeth and ward off the cavities of reverse dogma is to have conversations or debates about why the philosophical ideas of your favorite philosophers are simple, illogical, or just plain wrong.

Of course the philosophers/ies which are hard to dismiss are those who encourage you to find your own evidence and verify your beliefs through your own experiences (which most psychedelic "gurus" do). Then who ya gonna call?

unless one happened to be born apart from any culture or human contact then all thoughts, ideas, etc. are influenced by the ideas of those who have come before you. no idea is formed in a vacuum.

that's how ideas work. i thought you would have figured that out by now.

Leary said when the Buddhists got too close they would start drinking; when sober people got too attached they would whip out the hard drugs; when intellectual scientists started grouping they would turn to spirituality. So, naturally, when psychedelic users came to Watts with the "answers," he subsequently told them to hang up the phone yo (which was probably large and connected to the wall, during those neohippie years).

while i think mckenna was very intelligent, and above all entertaining, i definitely see this sort of pseudo intellectual strain of his followers who are, admittedly, extremely obnoxious. i see a lot of that flavor on here in regard to the "philosophical" discussions that take place. a lot of people who participate aren't even familiar with fundamental philsophical concepts. which is fine except they try to speak from a place of authority on subjects that are clearly over their head. i don't say that as any sort of expert, but i know enough to know when someone doesn't have a good grasp on what they're talking about.

with robert anton wilson, not so much. the funniest part about ole bob is that he intentionally puts bullshit into his books and lectures for people who just want to take his word on everything. i really enjoy wilson's stuff, especially his literary analysis and lectures on magick.

be that as it may, alan watts is a bad ass, and the counterculture could use a lot more voices like his now, probably more than ever.

This trick is used by computer programmers to insert additional but superfluous code, making it easier to spot people who are stealing and copying.

Google recently employed similar antics on the Bing search engine.

hmmm...perhaps you could rephrase what you said for the benefit of my simple mind. because what i read was that you don't like people "never forming their own opinions, just spouting out shit they heard in a book or on a tape".

so whether you form your opinion based on a book, a tape, a t.v. program, a lecture, a conversation told 'round a fire, etc. it's still not truly "your" opinion.

learn about socialization. it will do wonders for this conversation.
