she follows the path to the river shore, Lightly sung, her song is the latch on the morning's door. See the sun sparkle in the reeds, silver beads, pass into the sea.

She comes from a town where they call her the woodcutter's daughter She's brown as the bank where she kneels down to gather her water And she bears it away with a love that the river has taught her Let it flow, greatly flow, wide and clear

Let it flow, greatly grow, wide and clear.
Round and round, the cut of the plow in the furrowed field, Seasons round, the bushels of corn and the barley meal, Broken ground, open and beckoning to the spring, Black dirt live again!

Let it grow, let it grow, greatly yield
What shall we say, shall we call it by a name As well to count the angels dancing on a pin Water bright as the sky from which it came And the name is on the earth that takes it in We will not speak, but stand inside the rain And listen to the thunder shout, "I am, I am, I am, I am"
I love that song. I play it on guitar often.

I have a pin right here, where do I look to see the angels on it? Are they hiding in the back of it?

Well Lightningfractal, I'll try to answer your question the best I can. You see, Aquinas devoted fourteen books of the Summa theologiae to the nature and powers of angels. He held that angels have form but not matter, and are therefore eternal and incorruptible. Angels are able to assume bodies; these bodies take up space, so only one angle can be in a particular place at a certain time. In contrast, Duns Scotus asserted that angels consist of both form and a noncorporeal matter particular to them alone, which makes it possible for more than one angle to occupy the same place at the same time (De Anima, XV; De rerum principio, VII-VIII). The ensuing debates over these positions may have given rise to the early modern legend that the Scholastics argued over such questions as how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
Okay I admit it I cheated. Those aren't my own words. I got them from here: http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/grow.html

I just found that particular lyric funny, and have for the longest time. It gives rise to questions of my own, such as:
Why are angels apparently especially fond of pins?
Should I be carrying a pin around to attract them to me?
So do angels dance on needles too, or is their dance hall limited to pins only.
Is it really METAL pins, or was he referring to MUSHROOM pins? (I'm sure someone here will want to/insist upon believing the latter.)
How many angels are in a whole BOX of pins?
How to they dance without poking their feet?
Do they sleep on pin-cushions?
Is "pin the tail on the donkey" therefore a religious game?
Are they listening to music coming from thimbles?
Do angels pay a cover charge to get onto a pin?
Are there bouncers on rubber bands?
Do they do the "twist" on twist ties?
Do gay angels dance on BUTTons?
Are angels encouraged to dance wisely on "safety" pins?
Is the Walmart sewing department sacred ground?
Can anyone help me with these questions? I am hoping to learn more about the angel clubbin' scene. Thanks!

Those are some deep questions I will have to ponder in solitude for some time before I can begin to answer any of those.
Oh and DeepBlue42, the chords for that song can be found at http://www.rukind.com. You should try to figure out tablature, it's really easy. I especially like playing the part that comes after "she follows the path to the river shore" where it's the same chord shape that starts at the 1st fret, then the 4th, 7th and finally the 10th. It sounds really cool after a little practice. Sometimes I like to play Weather Report before Let it Grow. You'll notice that on rukind.com they have the whole intro guitar part tabbed out for Weather Report Suite. Man I love that song...
Winter gray and falling rain, We'll see summer come again, Darkness falls and seasons change (gonna happen every time). Same old friends the wind and rain, (we'll see summer by and by) Winter gray and falling rain, (summers fade and roses die) We'll see summer come again, Like a song that's born to soar the sky.

I didn't even knew you played, how long have you been at it?
I haven't touched mine in a long time, I really should work with it more often.

I've been playing for like 7 or 8 years. I never had lessons. I pretty much just mess around. I have a Fender Strat but I actually find it much more enjoyable playing my dad's acoustic guitar. I guess the kind of stuff I play is more conducive to acoustic rather than electric. I find it very therapeutic to play. It helps lift my spirits a little, which I've been needing more and more these days.
