on my way to australia on friday i'm gonna be stopping in LA for 5 hours. i was thinkin i was just gonna be stuck in the airport the whole time, but i went on google earth and saw that the airport is like right next to the beach. i would love to go out to the beach and meet some people. i've never been to the west coast before, and i hear the people are so much friendlier out there. would it be reasonable for me to leave the airport for a little while, or are the lines and goign through security so bad that i shouldn't risk it?
anybody know if there's an easy way to get to the beach from the airport? i need to be very careful because i don't want to miss my flight out. how much $ you think a cab ride would be?
or better yet, if anyone lives over near there, would anyone want to chill for awhile?

you'll have to go through customs to go to australia, that's all I would worry about, if you were late and customs was slow

yeah, well i got 5 hours. i figure i'd want to be back at the airport 2 hours before the flight departs anyway. figure 2 or 3 hours on the beach sure would beat sittin in the airport.

With only 5 hours, you'd be playin' it a little tight. Depending on the time of day, traffic can get pretty nasty - and getting out to a decent beach could be a pain. If you ask a taxi-cab to head out of the airport going south down Sepulveda and break right after a couple miles you'll hit Manhattan Beach, and below that, Hermosa. Those are probably the nicest beaches near the airport.. but really you will be pressed on time to find any cool hangout spots. Taxi's are expensive.. I don't often ride them so it's hard for me to estimate, but I'd suspect up to $40 round trip to beach and back. Cabbies that pick up from the curbside at LAX add a few bucks on to the fee as an "airport service charge" or some bunk shyte like that.
Not to discourage ya.. shit if I lived closer to LAX I'd come out there and take ya to the beach. Unfortunately I'm on the otherside of downtown up against the mountains and it'd take me 40 minutes in smooth traffic (and hours in rush) to get out there. Ah well, if your plane comes in early you may as well go on a little adventure - just make sure to leave yourself plenty of time to make it back in time for check in!

"Why You'd Want To Live Here"
I'm in Los Angeles today... It smells like an airport runway. Jet fuel stenches in the cabin And lights flickering at random.
I'm in Los Angeles today... Garbage cans comprise the medians of freeways always creaping Even when the population's sleeping.
And I can't see why you'd want to live here.
I'm in Los Angeles today... Asked a gas station employee if he ever had trouble breathing And he said "It varies from season to season, kid."
It's where our best are on display... Motion picture actors' houses Maps are never ever current So save your film and $15.
And I can't see why you'd want to live here. Billboards reach past the tallest buildings, "We are not perfect - but we sure try." As UV rays "degradate" our youth with time.
The vessel keeps pumping us through this entropic place In the belly of the beast that is Californ-i-a, I drank from a faucet and I kept my receipts For when the weigh me on my way out (Here nothing is free). The greyhounds keep coming Dumping locusts into the street Until the gutters overflow And Los Angeles thinks, "I might explode someday soon."
It's a lovely summer's day And I can almost see a skyline through a thickening shroud of egos. (Is this the city of angeles or demons?)
Here the names are what remain... Stars encapsulate the golden lane And they need constant cleaning for when the tourists begin salivating.
You can't swim in a town this shallow - you will most assuredly drown tomorrow.

ahh, i guess i better just stay at the airport then. i get there at 4:30 and leave at 9:50. id have to deal with rush hour when i arrive, and then i wouldnt want to take any chances at all going back to the airport. 40 bucks is a bit much for just an hour or 2 at the beach. thanks for the info

yeah dude stay at the airport. you MAY be able to find a ride out of LAX then go to the beach, step on the sand then go back to the airport and make it in time. it's really not that close to the beach, and i also wouldn't reccomend someone unfamiliar with the area galivanting around inglewood lookin' for the beach/airport.
