i am a beer lover. i know i am going to make some people's heads explode with this next statement...

im not really a fan of american microbrews.

here is my reason. american microbrews, in general, are too gimmicky. ive seen beers advertising chocolate, caffeine, blueberries, avocados, the MOST hops, the HIGHEST alcohol content, or any other number of totally meaningless ingredients.

i just want a fucking beer. :crankey:



obviously there are exceptions to every rule.. there are some craft beers out there that i absolutely love.

in general though.. 9 times out of 10 ill take a belgian ANYTHING before an american microbrew. :shrug:

Careful.  I once wrote a sarcastic post about how i was bored with west coast breweries hopping this shit out of there beers with cascade (and similar) hops and got 3 pages of people telling me I was a moron and knew nothing about beer.

Ha I was in Brussels once and there happened to be a large beer festival going on.  I drank large amounts of their beer and it started off fantastic, but after a while I started complaining to the brewers that their beers are all similar, and by the end I openly called them pussies for having overly sweet and non-bitter beers.  But, I like Belgian beers occasionally

i kinda know im opening a can of worms with that statement but whatever.. like i said.. its not ALL microbrews. a hell of a lot of them are like that though. there is no reason blueberries should ever be in a beer.

as always, it depends on what you are having. a lot of abbey ale is definitely on the bitter side (like Chimay).

my fav beer in the entire world is Oud Beersel's Oude Gueuze Vieille. that is more like a champagne than anything else. its very tart.


i know what you are saying though.. the widely accessible belgian white ales and belgian style stuff from the US can be very very similar (Hoegaarden, Alagash, Duvel, Delirium Tremens, etc)

That makes a lot of sense, in America people try to explode your taste buds just because they think they are being hipster instead of just providing a fresh, tasty beer...they rather stir up some ale potion and serve you the bottom of the barrel and charge you double the price hahaha

i know what you're saying that gimmickey shit is ridiculous but i still enjoy american beer more so than anything else i've ever tried. perhaps thats due to availability. sometimes non tradition ingredients can be a nice touch, like orange peel in a wheat. and i've tried a raspberry beer in a cool nyc beer bar which was pretty tasty. but regardless i agree that berries do not belong in beer.
