US prison population peaks (BBC News)

One in every 142 people living in the United States was in jail last year.

US population = 286 million (more than 2 million inmates)

China population = 1.3 billion (1.4 million inmates)

That's scary...  :frown:

The drug war is nothing more than a civil war. All it has done is make coke as cheap and available as pot used to be. If you locked up everyone who had ever tried an illicit substance, then there wouldn't be anyone left. Didn't bush try coke?

Bush not only was addicted to coke, but his daughter was busted for cocaine and was only given a slap on the wrist, while everyone else goes to jail  :mad:

bush's daughters got busted for underage drinking. jeb's daughter (george's neice), got busted for prescription fraud while trying to illegally pick up some xanax. there are allegations that george w. bush used cocaine, but whether he was 'addicted' or not is something for which there is absolutely not a shred of evidence. for the young ladies in the bush family, penalties were the same as any other first time offenders with the same offenses (fines, mandatory counseling, etc.). where are you getting this information?

the drug war drives up the price of drugs, making it more profitable to sell drugs and more expensive to be an addict. both of which only contribute to the violence and crime falsely attributed to drugs themselves.

well if you spend billions and billions of dollars building new prisons then i guess you have to fill them up, work camps are big business. america's capitol was built on the backs of slaves so is this really surprising? now, do any more countries want to be "liberated"(we'll cut down your civilians with machine guns and blow up your infrastructure...don't worry, you can pay us back later with your oil profits)?

They also get to socialize with and learn from more 'hardened' criminals. It's a veritable criminal indoctrination/training camp.

What Amerika did then is long gone- all those people who had slaves are now DEAD...so you shouldn't have to worry.

I think what he is saying is the mentality is the same, making people work for free. People caught for pot are being forced into slavery much like the blacks. Think of the problems caused if people were all of a sudden just let out.

yeah, the criminalization of black men is a thriving institution in this country.

we've got pointless laws keeping prisons full of poor young black men, where they're forced to work, though they've harmed no one.

it's eerily reminiscent of slavery.
