Much as I try and avoid buying from China, sometimes I must * rant*

Up here in Canada I often get fustrated at finding that some products are difficult to find.
For example today I spent 2 hours calling around trying to find a reasonably priced "stir magnet". Get this, one place : "Fisher Scientific" wanted to charge me for a single STIR BAR OCTAGONAL 1X3/8 = $53.03
Here was what the bill looked like on line: Total: 2.27 Total Charges: SubTotal: 2.27 Transportation Charge: 27.50 Minimum order charge 15.00 Fuel surcharge: 2.15 HST: 6.11 Total: 53.03
So I ended up going on e-bay and buying 5 of them from China, including shipping for the price of $20.
So before I bought from China I called the store, which is actually about 2 miles from where I live and told the sales girl I only wanted to purchase a $3 item and could pick it up from their store.
I could not get anywhere or reason with this woman. I told her that she did a great job in motivating me to buy from China rather than local. Is it me, or do other folks find that sometimes the world seems retarded?

A lot of these lab supply companies have min order because they are not really geared for the hobbyist but instead for academic and research companies.
The solution to your problem is shop around and order other supplies alongside your items. With the price of fuel going through the roof these days many companies have added fuel charges and other fee's.
From pro-lab scientific the min order is $25 I believe and shipping is roughly $14.

8 x 13mm (5/16" x ½") $4.25 X6 = $25.50+ $14 shipping = $39.50+HST.
It all comes down to personal choice, I personally would rather fork out a bit more cash then directly order chinese goods. I am a big believer in supporting your local economy for obvious reasons.
Also you could simply use a nail or other small stainless steel scrap and avoid the entire problem of having to order stir bars.
