Sharing migraine symptoms
    #14118688 -

Hi all,

This is probably my favorite forum on the web, so I figured I'd start my search here.  I am an amateur cultivator, so I feel at home here I suppose.  I've read all the amazing work being done with psilocybin and migraine / cluster headache treatment.  That has nothing to do with why I began cultivating though it is a noteworthy coincidence.  The fact of the matter is that I didn't even know I suffered from migraines until this past weekend.

I'm extremely active and I compete regularly in wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu.  Practices are hard and I'm often exhausted and overheated.  When this happens, it's common for me to experience visual distortions, white-outs in portions of my vision and a spacey feeling that kinda feels like the onset of mushy-goodness.  Never lasted more than an hour, never anything more than mildly curious.  Mostly because these visuals only affect one eye - like a camera flash that I cant clear from my vision and gets brighter and brighter.  There's always some degree of headache, also on only one side of my head (opposite side of visual distortion) but easily ignorable.

Lately, life has been testing my stress levels for all the normal reasons.  I've been experiencing more of these visual distortions.  They are more pronounced, occurring at least once a week now, sometimes in clusters.  The come without physical exercise.  Visuals in my right eye becomes snowy with slices of intense, strobing light arcing up and away from center towards the right "corner" of my field of vision.  It renders my eye useless and seriously disrupts my balance.

My thoughts become confused.  Words scrambled like a dyslexic on crack.  I speak completely intelligent sounding gibberish, very articulate and sounds like a real language.  The words are eve scrambled in my brain when I think them.  Scrambled on paper as I write them.  There is no toughing it out or working through it.  Last Friday this happened to me at work and it was a very difficult situation to conceal (I write code).

So, as it turns out, I have a preliminary diagnosis of Silent Retinal Migraine with Aura.  That means no real headache, just halo (bright radiating light / incredible sensitive to light) and visual disturbances in one eye.  I guess I'm lucky to have dodged the headache for so long.  I never really have pain, just pressure.  It's only really uncomfortable if I cough.

So, that that.  Does anyone else here experience anything like this?  I figured the folks in this community would appreciate the neural effects of this "condition" at the very least.  In particular, I'd like to know if anyone has a spiritual take on migraine and migraine aura conditions.

Best Regards

I hardly ever get the aura but I suffer from frequent bad migraines. This is why I started to grow shrooms. I was also allergic to sumitriptan and had bad reactions to other drugs. Topamax almost made me commit suicide (and the doctor who gave it to me told me off for using shrooms! WTF!).

Mine are triggered by changes in weather which sucks but I have started to take feverfew this year and I haven't had as many migraines. However, Summer is always a good time for me and it's not long been Autumn so we'll see how I go but so far so good. I won't get my hopes up yet as I've done that before. A lot of the time caffeine and aspirin works but not always so then I have to use shrooms. Occasionally shrooms won't work but it's rare.

I get aphasia like you describe. I understand people fine but trying to talk or write can be a challenge. I might feel depressed for a few days afterwards for no reason in particular and I'll also feel wiped out and lack energy but it depends on how bad the migraine is. I also become sensitive to light, sound and smell and sometimes I feel as if I'm going to vomit.

Thanks for the feedback.  It really was like a lightning bolt hit me when I started to read about migraines.  I've had these damn things for years.  I even went to the ER for a suspected stroke once after a really hard practice.  Absent the headache it was really tough to pin down.

Now I can't stop thinking about all the dots I can connect.  I've never really suffered from depression, but I have after every major migraine bout.  I've also experienced extreme mania and unexplainable energy prior to most migraines.  I was diagnosed as ADHD early on in my childhood.  It never seemed right though, because the lack of attention span isn't constant.  I might take me years to get down to the bottom of all of this.

So do you think your trigger is exertion?

The shitty thing is that there are so many different triggers and there are different types of migraines so not every medicine will work for each type of migraine. I know some people who get hemiplegic migraines which mimic the effects of a stroke. They lose the ability to control one side of their bodies. The discrimination also sucks because it's an invisible disease and people think you're faking it or using it as an excuse for a hangover or something.

Another thing you need to be careful of is rebound headaches. If you take too many painkillers, like those based on codeine etc, then it can end up giving you more headaches. It's also bad for your liver.

Have you tried using shrooms during a migraine yet? Sumitriptan is related to psilocybin but it doesn't make you hallucinate. You can get a prescription for it and in some countries you don't need a prescription. However, it used to be quite expensive and I think it's still somewhat expensive in many places. The upside is that you can get on with your day without tripping balls but you can save a lot of money if you grow your own shrooms instead.

Yes, this happened to me the one time I went to the ER.  My right arm curled up like a chicken wing and I couldn't straighten it out.  7 hours of tests and scans revealed that 7 hours in the ER predictably raises my blood pressure.

As for my triggers, one is definitely physical activity.  Very likely elevated blood pressure in general.  I thought there might be a link to TMJ/TMD (jaw disorder), though this is far too heatedly debated for me to venture an opinion.  Could be, likely not.  Just because I have both doesn't mean they have to be related.  There is a definite correlation to stress.  There is a strong possibility that poor sleep is a trigger for me as well.

I was also concerned about the discrimination aspect as well, once I was stricken, as described above, in the middle of a team meeting.  I must admit, my poker face was impeccable.  Now I carry around a card that says, 'One moment please, I'm having a fucking migraine'.  Everyone loves it.
