Here's what the makers of American Spirit say concerning their FSC compliance...

Dear Guy,

Thank you for your email and for your interest in our Fire Standards Compliant (FSC) cigarettes. Please find the information on our Natural American Spirit FSC cigarettes listed below. We do not have information on the production methods or ingredients used by other tobacco companies. If you have any additional questions please feel free to call us at 1-800-332-5595 and any of our Customer Care specialists will be happy to assist you personally. Our normal office hours are 6am to 8:30pm Mountain Time.

"Fire Standards Compliant," (FSC) is a phrase Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company uses to describe the Natural American Spirit cigarettes that have been tested and have satisfied the requirements of the states of New York, Vermont, California, Oregon, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Illinois, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Utah, Alaska, Rhode Island, Washington DC, Minnesota, Delaware, Iowa, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas. These tests, according to state authorities, measure the tendency of a cigarette to self-extinguish if left unattended. FSC regulations have been in place in several of these states since 2004, and we expect that all states will eventually adopt this law. All tobacco companies are required to abide by this law.

Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company does not add any chemicals to our tobacco to comply with State fire safety laws. We simply use a new type of flax-based cigarette paper which has built-in “speed bumps.” Two speed bumps are placed in horizontal bands along the length of the cigarette. The burn retardant bands are virtually non-porous. As a result, not enough oxygen can diffuse through the bands to the burning tobacco in order to support the smoldering process. As the lit end burns across these bands, the supply of oxygen is restricted and the cigarette is more likely to self-extinguish.

The material used to create the speed bumps is a natural starch, made from a water based alginate that is an extract of seaweed. This alginate is food use approved, biodegradable and applied to the paper in a water solution. Our Fire Standards Compliant (FSC) cigarettes contain the same amount of tobacco that Natural American Spirit cigarettes always have, and we use only the same premium quality 100% additive-free natural tobacco our customers have come to know and expect.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us, Guy. We hope this information has been helpful.

Best regards,

The People of Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company

Sounds like a bunch of jargon conjured to not damage reputation.
What does the asterisk mean?
That's just the kind of question I ask.

Well, they get the job done, but they're kinda shoddy. You need to reload the tobacco everytime, and it's arduous.

For some more money you can get machines that really shit out the smokes, like this thing, http://www.fast-filler.com/eng/index.html , which boasts eight cigarettes a minute.

While I imagine that's mostly marketing, it's a hell of a lot better than that little doohickey.

What fucking asterisk?  And no, I replied to trip forever because he's the one who said, "To all those who think they're smart smoking American Spirits you realize that also has FSC?".  So now I'm wasting time responding to your two incorrect points.  Review your shit before you post.

And the correspondence from Santa Fe Co. clearly states that the FSC bands are made from algae.  Are you suggesting they're lying?

semi-related:

i quit cigarettes on wednesday (not really because i wanted to but because ive had a horrible cough and smoking wasnt helping). today while walking to the atm i was thinking to myself "i might buy a pack of stoges at the gas station. but if im already 2 days without them and havent craved one yet i might as well just stop and save the money."

i shit you not, 15 seconds later there was an empty pack of the SAME KIND that i smoke (marb 27's) in the middle of the sidewalk. that made me fucking crave one.

i fought the urge though. didnt get a pack. but i must admit, seeing that pack did something to me. ever since i saw that empty pack on the ground ive been thinking about how nice it would be to just walk down the road and get a pack.

but i know that the 'i really want a cigarette' urge just means that in reality i DONT want a cigarette.

Ok, here goes:

- The asterisk after SPEED BUMPS.

- I'm not suggesting anything other than FSC does no good for the general public, and is for someone's profit (though i am not heavily invested in this thought), BUT....

- In response to your last sentence, I would not be surprised if a tobacco company lied.

I am drunk but I am not stupid... quote me on that.

They're called quotation marks.
notice how the first one is before the phrase 'speed bumps' ?
the second one generally comes at the end of the phrase.

If you can't distinguish between characters in a font: try increasing the text size, get a larger monitor, put down the booze, something other than making yourself look like a fool.

I don't think American Spirit is anywhere near as natural and free of additives as the guy's home grown cigarettes in this video. Companies have liberties as to what they can say is in their products. For example, I recently learned that orange juice companies such as Tropicana that sell what they claim to be "not from concentrate"  use additives in their orange juice -- I forget what exactly but I think it was something like some type of orange oil and/or a flavor additive derived from oranges. As long as the additive is natural and in low-enough-concentrations they don't have to list it.

Using single quotes in the context in which you're using them is British English.
