Dream interpretation is rather pointless IMO, and assumes that there is some sort of greater meaning behind dreams, when in actuality, they are nothing but mere neural oscillations. :brainfart:

That said, I've been having some kick-ass dreams these past couple of nights. :stoned:

I've been thinking about this.  I don't fully agree with your OP.

While our dreams may or may not be directly related to our psychological state they do get me thinking about my psychological state.  I "interpret" certain dreams in accordance with what is important to me at the time. They get me to thinking about things and that's worthwhile in and of itself.

I agree with you, maybe I shouldn't have said that dream interpretation is 'pointless', but rather, that it shouldn't be considered an exact science.

For example: let's say I have a dream about driving around town in the middle of the day, and discover that not a single person is outside. Someone may interpret this to mean that I feel lonely in my waking life, but in reality, it could mean almost anything, or nothing.

That dream symbolizes guilt.

For me it symbolized the negative vibes I create for myself when arguing on the internet. We were actually playing SC2 in the dream which has been a big cause of these negative feelings for me.

I believe dreams to be a truly amazing thing, for if only one reason alone. In a dream, your brain occupies all senses (sight, thought, touch, smell, hearing, ect.) In "reality" (for lack of a better word) your brain does not do this, information is provided to it to model our "reality." So, the brain must have much more mental power than consciously known to model all these senses to an accurate extent, or at least that would be a likely hypothesis..

This is interesting because it means in a "dream" we can model senses, you don't need the physical sensory organ to provide it. Unlike "reality" where you can only sense what information your physical sensory organs are providing your brain. This leaves the possibility that you could "sense" more in a "dream" than in "reality" because you don't need the physical part of it anymore, its no longer in the physical realm of things. I believe this to be the case personally, because of personal experiences in dreams, non-drug influenced. That I will not get into right now for the sake of validity. I am not making your choice in weather to believe anything or not.

So, for reasons that make too much sense in my eyes, I would deduct that "reality" would be more random and meaningless than the "dream" state of being.

No, because dreams result from random neural oscillations (i.e. they are formed by information that has been gathered by the brain IRL).

It would be interesting to know whether or not newborn babies dream; if they do dream, it would be interesting to know what kinds of things they dream about.

Dreams are completely random IME, even lucid ones. Even if your hypothesis was true, I'm not sure why you figure that would mean that reality is more meaningless than dreams.

How could this be stated true if we can do things not possible in the physical world to which no previous experience can be obtained?

I completely agree with that! ^^^

It cannot be proved any more true that dreams are anything but random...

Once again, I don't wanna question your beliefs are try to sway you otherwise, this is all solely for the purpose of conversation and exchange of idea

Uh, what?

Dreams are random in that they lack a certain amount of predictability.

Very true. Does not mean they are "unpredictable" though. Also doesn't mean I'm not crazy X) But, we all know what assumption is the mother of...

Still nice to chat on such an interesting subject poid

Alternatively, might children begin dreaming even earlier, and only start talking about it as preschoolers?

To solve this mystery, Roffwarg and associates undertook a classic study in 1966 (the associates included Dement, whose popular new book The Promise of Sleep is getting rave reviews). The research team began by studying sleep waves in newborns. The investigators believed that infants do not have REM sleep because they do not dream, but the researchers intended to discover what newborn sleep waves looked like. The team would continue to measure sleep waves throughout infancy and toddlerhood to learn when and how dreaming begins.

The startling discovery was, not only do newborns dream -- even on the first day of life -- they actually dream more than the college students in the original studies (Science, 1966; 152:604).

This study has been repeated several times, confirming and expanding our knowledge. We dream more in the first 2 weeks of life than at any other time. The visual part of the brain is more active during newborn REM sleep than during adult sleep. They seem to have more vivid visual dreams.

Infants 3 to 5 months old dream much more than infants 6 to 12 months old do. 18-month-olds dream almost twice as much as 3-year-olds do. By age 3, the amount of time spent dreaming per night is in the same range as that of young adults. As the wheel of time turns throughout life, each year we dream a little less (Science, 1966; 152:604).

I was just exaggerating a bit there, I don't think that they are completely random.

If dreams where completely random the concept of allocating meaning to them would not be an issue of conversation.

There would be no set concepts or let's call it "trends" that people can choose to agree or disagree with about the subject whatsoever.
