i can't bare to be alone with my thoughts.

i don't even know what to think. when i can't find a distraction my mind either broods or is analyzing my thoughts and desires...and they all seem so carnal...yet they don't really satisfy anything other than to distract myself even more.

what am i doing here?

Have you tried meditation?  I don't think this is necessarily a direct result of death anxiety or anything like that; more likely your mind is just hyperactive and needs some form of control over its thoughts.

All the more reason to test yourself by practicing it?  You could start with just five minutes a day, see how it goes, and increase from there.  The benefits are truly invaluable.

what are these benefits...and how can you directly attribute them to the meditation?

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meditation#Scientific_studies

"A 2003 meta-analysis found that mindfulness-based stress reduction, which involves continuous awareness of consciousness, without seeking to censor thoughts, concluded that the form of meditation may be broadly useful for individuals attempting to cope with clinical and nonclinical problems. Diagnoses for which MBSR was found to be helpful included chronic pain, fibromyalgia, cancer patients and coronary artery disease. Improvements were noted for both physical and mental health measures"

"Studies done by Yale, Harvard, Massachusetts General Hospital have shown that meditation increases gray matter in the brain and slows down the deterioration of the brain as a part of the natural aging process."

"More recent research suggests that meditation may increase attention spans. A recent randomized study published in Psychological Science reported that practicing meditation led to doing better on a task related to sustained attention"

Health benefits of Meditation:

It lowers oxygen consumption.
It decreases respiratory rate.
It increases blood flow and slows the heart rate.
Increases exercise tolerance in heart patients.
Leads to a deeper level of relaxation.
Good for people with high blood pressure as it brings the B.P. to normal.
Reduces anxiety attacks by lowering the levels of blood lactate.
Decreases muscle tension (any pain due to tension) and headaches.
Builds self-confidence.
It increases serotonin production which influences mood and behaviour. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, obesity, insomnia and headaches.
Helps in chronic diseases like allergies , arthritis etc.
Reduces Pre- menstrual Syndrome.
Helps in post-operative healing.
Enhances the immune system. Research has revealed that meditation increases activity of 'natural-killer cells', which kill bacteria and cancer cells.
Also reduces activity of viruses and emotional distress.

There are a few types of meditation, but a basic kind consists of sitting some place where you won't be disturbed, closing your eyes, and focusing your attention on your breath as you slowly inhale and exhale.  The point is to recognize all stray thoughts as they arise and gently let them slip away again; the instant you notice your mind trying to drift off into distractions, come back to the recognition of your breath.  In general it's a very effective practice for building attention span and concentration.

Well, I wouldn't do it when you're feeling sleepy as you might just drift off into a nap rather than meditate, but other than that I'd say it probably doesn't make a difference.

Indeed, I'm with Cypher here.
'Samatha' is the 'Stillnes of the mind' and is the first step to take over control over ones' distracted thoughts again.

Quote:
Etymology
The Tibetan term for samatha is shiney (wylie: zhi-gnas). According to Jamgon Kongtrul, insight may be garnered by an exegesis of the etymology of śamatha and shiney:

The Tibetan term is shiné [shi-ne] (shi-gnas) and the Sanskrit is Shamatha. In the case of the Tibetan, the first syllable, shi, and in the case of the Sanskrit, the first two syllables, shama, refer to "peace" and "pacification". The meaning of peace or pacification in this context is that normally our mind is like a whirlwind of agitation. The agitation is the agitation of thought. Our thoughts are principally an obsessive concern with past, conceptualization about the present, and especially an obsessive concern with the future. This means that usually our mind is not experiencing the present moment at all.[3]

The semantic field of shi and shama is "pacification", "the slowing or cooling down", "rest".[4] The semantic field of né is "to abide or remain" and this is cognate or equivalent with the final syllable of the Sanskrit, thā.[5]

curious mouse just out of curiosity how long have you felt like this? and when did you notice these thoughts/tendencies. for me i noticed about a 2  earth years ago to varying degrees but became fully aware of it a year and a half ago maybe more and have since focused on my college course work and exercising but it is still there. almost like i am void, not full, i cant decide if its "good" or "bad" or just not a big deal but realizing this has made me make some positive changes.

nevertheless sending good vibes to all. peace.

I’ve been walking forty miles of bad road
If the Bible is right, the world will explode
I’ve been trying to get as far away from myself as I can
Some things are too hot to touch
The human mind can only stand so much
You can’t win with a losing hand

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

my memory is shot so i couldn't tell you how long i've been feeling this way. i think this is a fairly recent revelation though. i also can't decide if it's "good" or "bad" but i can feel it starting to make a positive change.

hopefully.

I think you're just on the road to discovering yourself.

You can't be afraid of it because out of this "down time" you'll learn some amazing things that you can apply to the rest of your life in order to flourish. I advise you not to feel down...but just have faith in yourself...that you're okay...and that you're growing, and learning for the better.

If you feel uncomfortable take the time to search yourself and find out WHY....you can't be afraid of the dark corners of your mind.
