Yep, your casing needs to be sterile for sure. There are several good articles posted under Grow/Find/Cultivation here on the shroomery that will give you step by step instructions, or you can go to www.sporechicks.com and check out their casing tek. I like the looks of that one but have never tried it.

um wrong psil, yoru casings don't need to be sterilized unless they contain dung, potting mix etc. Peat/verm casings work fine with no sterilization at all.

You can find Jiffy Mix at Wal-Mart in the gardening section, it's $2.50 a bag. I think you should sterilize it b\c I've had some problems with contamination. I am without a pressure cooker and thought I sterilized it in the oven ok, but I guess not. Anyone have any advice until I get the p. cooker?

yes you can sterilize in the oven.. well casing ingrediants anyway, not substrate jars.. it is always a good idea to sterilize casing material, but i have never done that and have had great yields.. there is infact a bacteria that assists in primordia formation found in peat moss, and it would be killed if you sterilize the casing ingrediants.. but if your having problems with contamination, you should sterilize.
