Some people would have been able to reload without being stopped by some granny, thus perhaps negating the need for high capacity clips. Or alternatively, had the foresight to bring TWO guns.

Regardless, you have made your point, guns are a deadly weapon. If they weren't it would be meaningless that we had the right to bear them. They are not, however, weapons of mass destruction.

Thank you, and I agree that guns are not weapons of 'mass destruction'.  It should perhaps be noted, however, that the Tucson shooter was only taken down when his clip was empty and he had to stop to put in a new one.  This makes me wonder whether fewer people might have been injured or killed if only 10 or 12 shot clips had been available.  The point that he could have simply brought more than one loaded weapon does temper that concern, though I still find myself wondering for what purpose any law-abiding citizen or target shooter would need a 30+ shot magazine?

I really dont mean it as an attack or vitriol, my point is, and I believe Prisoner's point too, that guns are only a weapon when you intend them as such. A gun in good hands is a good thing, a gun in bad hands a bad thing.

But guns are used in self defense or offense rarely outside the military.

The problem with mass/spree killers is their mindstate, not their weapon of choice.

Example, suppose you're sitting at Burger King and some maniac comes in and starts killing people. Wouldnt you prefer Prisoner#1 sitting there eating a burger with a pistol under his vest, and wouldn't you prefer it to be a high capacity, high caliber pistol? Or would you prefer a guy sitting there with a cellphone who can make exceptionally accurate eye witness descriptions to the police?

The Burger King maniac, if he has a gun yes thats a bad thing. But you are safer, without even knowing it, if someone like Prisoner#1 happens to be present with a gun - someone who can stay cool under combat conditions and who absolutely won't stop until the danger is neutralized.

the raw statistics on the number of people murdered by guns

If you subtract the number of very ill or very old people using their gun as a substitute for euthanasia laws befitting a civilized nation, and the number of kids getting hurt because dad can't be arsed to safely store his weapon and educate his kids about the dangers, that number is cut right in half.

guns are extraordinarly well suited tools for murderers

No disagreement there. They are also extrordinarily well built tools for stopping murderers, so its really a double edged sword (which is also a great tool that cuts both ways)

Face it - the Tucson shooter would have used a truck full of ANFO if he had access to one, or the knowledge to build one (without getting very busted very quickly), but he didn't need anything close to that elaborate to murder and wound all the people he did.  From what I recall, even Eric Rudolph didn't rack up the body count this Tucson guy did - and Rudolph engaged in multiple attempts with multiple bombs placed in strategic locations.

eric rudolph's goal wasnt to kill people, Timothy McVey OTOH, his goal
was to kill people and he did so quite well, nearly 300 people

I'm still wondering why you believe a law abiding citizen shouldnt have
a 30rd magazine, why should the majority be punished for the actions of
one or two, is that not how drug prohibition works, a couple of
irresponsible users die as a result of some drug and suddenly it's too
evil for anyone to have

are you a prohibitionist?

Are we going to outlaw knives after this?

If you outlaw guns then only outlaws will have them. Well, them and the government. I don't know about you but that scares the crap out of me. Thus my reasoning that decent people should arm themselves to the teeth.

I am going to quote one of the GREAT Presidents of the United States of America! Because I believe that we should look upon the guidance of one of America's Forefathers.

"Never trust a man that does not hunt"
-Theodore Roosevelt

And thats the guideline that should be followed when discussing gun laws

If you don't hunt your not trusted and do not have a say in it.

(I am going to get hated on for saying that I believe)

Also here is another quote from the great teddy.

And this should be a rule for what ever country you move to. (just replace English for that countries national language)

“Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country.”
-Theodore Roosevelt

As far as I know, no one is seriously proposing such an idea in the US.  Some people would like to see more regulation to increase gun safety, and prevent crazy people from getting too much firepower, and even these ideas are nearly impossible to get passed because the N.R.A. spins such regulations into "ZOMG they're coming for your guns!"

I've seen some great points many by Priz
My opinions;
-Guns will exist so for the general safety they must be accessible so that good guys have them too (for example mass murderers are cut short by armed citizens).
-Countries that outlaw guns see dramatic rises in crime (read defenseless victims susceptible to criminals).
-Guns were granted by our forefathers so that the government will be kept in check (among other reasons), this is the chief reason though.  They lived through tyranny and gave us the powers needed to fight that when it reared its ugly head Foreign AND Domestic.

I'm fine with this, and support gun safety courses and background checks to make sure that the right people are getting guns.  I also believe in more strict licensing requirements for more dangerous guns such as machine guns.  As it happens, this is exactly what current gun laws do.  The effect is that very few criminals are able to get their hands on machine guns.

The statistics do not bear this out.  The experience of European countries that have enacted strong restrictions on firearms has not been one of large increases in crime.  Now, this doesn't mean the opposite either.  I suspect their low crime rates have more to do with their greater level of socioeconomic equality.  In fact, most reliable statistics I've seen have been pretty inconclusive on whether gun prohibition increases or decreases violent crime.  On the whole, it doesn't really seem to have much effect one way or another.

Well, sort of.  Note that the second amendment mentions militias.  The idea was that states would have their own militias that they could call up if the need arose.  Such militias would be composed of citizens of those states, and would require that those citizens be armed.  What you have to remember is that: (a) The United States was initially supposed to be a consortium of relatively autonomous states united under one federal government, and (b) Most of the founders did not want us to have a standing army.  Basically, instead of a standing army, state militias would be able to be called up when the need arose and defend the security of the state(note that the 2nd amendment refers to the "security of a free State") from tyranny both foreign or domestic.  So it wasn't about citizens overthrowing their government so much as keeping the states relatively autonomous.

So you do agree with him..? I do. I also agree with the restrictions. If your not a criminal and want a gun then so be it.

More and more today all the states are becoming the same and more federal laws are passed telling states what to do. I think The states should have alot more freedom then they do today. You like this.. cool go to that state.. you like that.. cool go to that state. and so on
