Re: Panicking when swimming in ocean [Re: thissongis]

Last time I went surfing a shark swam in between me and my friend, when we were only 10 ft apart.

I haven't swam in the ocean since. Something about no longer being at the top of the food chain is not really my cup of tea.

Yea I agree, that fear it puts in you in fucking intense. I know for sure the 2 sharks I saw were at least a foot or 2 longer than me. I was at panama city beach too, 20 yards away away were little kids in swimmies and shit. I didnt run back screaming sharks because I didnt want everyone to freak out, in retrospect I should have.

Yeah, its always the god damn seaweed or a jelly fish that scares the living shit out of me. I am pretty scared of sharks too so things bumping into me that I can't see is no bueno.

I'm pretty scared about swimming in very deep water. I do it anyway. I like lakes better than oceans though. I saw a shark once when I was scuba diving, that freaked me out.

I have no problem swimming in lakes or rivers. Worst you have to worry about is snakes near the shore.

Oceans have always freaked me out, even before the shark incident. I've stepped on/been pinched by crabs, been stung by jellyfish and even saw half a washed up dolphin or porpoise on shore with obvious bite marks on it.

At least at a lake or river you only have to worry about snakes and underwater obstacles. I'm usually fine unless my feet touch something that doesn't feel familiar.

Plus, the past few years my beach of choice has been New Smyrna, Florida, which is the shark attack capitol of the world as far as humans go.

I'm not as scared of creatures in the water as I am of rip tides and currents...

I got caught in a mean rip current when I was younger (and a relatively strong swimmer)...
Now, I like to swim with fins...

The ocean freaks me out... One time at the Black Sea I saw a jelly fish that was like 3 feet long, and 2 feet wide.. And I saw it come up to the surface only inches away from where I was soaking my feet off the side of a katamaran

I was younger and back then I had the balls to just swim and dive in like.. the middle of the ocean.. Now it'd probably freak me the fuck out..

About 10 years ago my friends dad had a nasty encounter with a Portuguese man of war. Ya know the ones with like 50 ft tentacles.

Well he got all wrapped up in the tentacles and had to be med flighted by helicopter right off the fucking beach. He had some sort of allergic reaction, his airway closed up and he was in the hospital for close to a month. Organs shut down, 10% chance of survival, it was ridiculous.

He lived, but now has some crazy string like scars all around his torso, chest and arms.

He no longer swims in the ocean, needless to say.
