The Illuminatus! Trilogy
    #9023021 - 10/03/08 10:30 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

At a local head shop I saw the Illuminatus Trilogy sitting on the shelf.  I've been more interested in reading science fiction, and this seems to be rambling drug induced science fiction, which sounds awesome, but very dense.

Has anybody read any of the Illuminatus books?  Is this a good read?

i read it
it was a while fnord ago and I feel like I need to read it again.
There are some very interesting parts, but its pretty fucked  up, and as you say, rambling
wait until you get fnord to the part with the ultimate hooker who makes guys cum like 50 times in one setting. lol
i like the part with fnords too.

It's my favorite book of all time.  It completely shattered my idea of what reality is and could be as well as what I thought a novel could be.

It is a trip and you must read it multiple times.

A piece of advice I was given before reading it was: make it to page 100.  If you can get at least that far, then you're good.  that's when the story settles down a bit and you can then finally get an idea of what's going on.

It's like coming up on a huge dose of a psychedelic.  You're not sure what's going on, but hold on, it will level out.

i agree with everything said above.

as time goes by and the more i delve into mysticism, the occult and philosophy the less it feels like science fiction actually.

more like manual.

Interesting reviews.  I don't want to read too much about it, because I would like it to stand alone for my own interpretation, but the more I learn the more interested I am.  The first book is on Amazon for about 3.50, so I'm going to have to pick it up and embark on this deranged novel.

While we are on the topic of odd yet intriguing books, anybody pursuing this thread have any others that they really enjoyed?

Very good book.  A few too many characters and it delves a bit too much into meta-fiction at parts, but it's still an excellent, worthwhile read.

Schrodinger's Cat Trilogy - Robert Anton Wilson (psuedo-sequel to Illuminatus! - same characters, different reality)

Historical Illuminatus Trilogy - Robert Anton Wilson (a lot more about magick and the occult, Hagbard Celine's (you'll see) grandfather is the main character)

Foucault's Pendulum - Umberto Eco

lol, welcome to post-modern sci-fi

i love RAW. deCypher is right - it takes some getting used to (and at least a few reads before it makes much sense, if there is any sense to be made of it) but it is well worth it, imo.
