I think domestication might be preferable to this.  Slaughtering animals can be done with the animal's ignorance up until the final second if you do it appropriately, say on a small scale.

I wonder if I could decapitate a pig in a single blow with a large axe?  Probably so now that I think of it.

A guillotine would work well too.

Im not by any means saying that it is fucked up to hunt the animals, at our roots that is what we are biologically engineered to do.  We have to live even if it means those organisms below us must die.  but at the same time, getting stuck by a shit ton of spears wouldnt be a very fun way to go out.  sure they get fucked by hyenas and what not anyway, but that doesnt make either way less fucked up.
